The Walking Dead original series ran between 2010 and 2022, and many characters became so beloved that they earned their own spinoff series. With more shows to come, a recent spinoff is a major hit on Netflix.

After the conclusion of the original The Walking Dead series, fans got a chance to see one of the most anticipated reunions: Rick and Michonne. In 2024, the two beloved characters got their own spin-off showing the aftermath of Rick’s alleged death in The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live. After its recent release on Netflix, the series is already a hit on the streaming service, as FlixPatrol reports The Ones Who Live is in the second spot in the top 10.

Sons of Anarchy alum Kim Coates continues to hype up his villainous character’s introduction in the upcoming The Walking Dead: Dead City Season 2.

The Ones Who Live premiered on Netflix on Jan. 13, 2025, and, a few days later, it’s already a hit. All six episodes of The Walking Dead spinoff miniseries are available on the platform. The Ones Who Live marks the seventh series in the franchise, and it aired on AMC and AMC+ between Feb. 25 to Mar. 31, 2024.

The Ones Who Live was originally planned to be a three-film series following Andrew Lincoln’s Rick Grimes and Danai Gurira’s Michonne. Still, the project was redeveloped into a six-episode limited series. Other characters from the franchise that appeared in the series were Pollyanna McIntosh as Jadis Stokes/Anne, a role she also reprised in World Beyond, Lesley-Ann Brandt as Pearl Thorne, and Terry O’Quinn as Major General Johnathan Beale, while Breeda Wool, Andrew Bachelor, Seth Gilliam, Cailey Fleming, and Antony Azor reprise their roles from The Walking Dead as Aiden, Bailey, Father Gabriel Stokes, Judith Grimes, and Rick “R.J.” Grimes Jr, respectively, in guest-starring roles.

The new Netflix series has achieved an impressive milestone in only five weeks despite its poor reviews.

The Ones Who Live follows Rick Grimes’ attempt to escape the CRM and his subsequent reunion with his longtime partner, Michonne. The limited series received positive reviews, and it currently has a Certified Fresh 88% score from the critics and 80% from the audience.

Will There Be a Season 2 for The Ones Who Live?

Considering the spinoff’s popularity and the fact that it features some of the most beloved The Walking Dead characters, fans would want to see more of Rick and Michonne. The Ones Who Live helped Rick go back home, where he was reunited with his children, Judith and R.J., whom he shares with Michonne. The series also left a possibility for a continuation.

Scott Gimple, the showrunner of the series, suggested that “anything is possible” when asked about The Ones Who Live Season 2. “Even if Rick dies in the last episode, anything is possible. We’re focused on this one right now. But this one came together in a really amazing way, where there were all sorts of plans. And then the world changed and we altered those plans.”

Ahead of the limited series’ finale, the stars and showrunner refused to confirm a continuation. “Can’t answer that,” Gurira said when asked about a second season. Gimple then teased, “Let’s just be quiet on this one.” For his part, Lincoln joked, “Well, I die in the last episode,” which had Gimple adding, “Or he’s doing a little psyop, and maybe he actually does.”

The Walking Dead universe is still set to continue, with two more spinoff shows returning in 2025: Daryl Dixon Season 3 and Dead City Season 2.
