Out of every type in the Pokémon franchise, the Dragon-type proves to be one of the most difficult to train and evolve, let alone find in the wild. Before the arrival of the Fairy-type in Generation VI, the Dragon-type was nearly unbeatable. Only a fellow Dragon-type could prove to be supereffective against this fearsome type of Pokémon, but it would prove to be a fight where the winner could be either Dragon-type.

The world of Pokémon Adventures, based on the events of the original games, tends to showcase the feats and battles of each Pokémon in a much more frank, often violent light. As such, the Dragon-type becomes even more incredible in their display of power, with the ability to save a world as well as destroy it. Some Trainers are fortunate enough to have a Pokémon with this strength by their side, for better or worse.

Emerald’s Sceptile Gains the Dragon-type Temporarily

Mega Evolution Allows the Grass-type To Gain a Second Type

Treecko, one of the three starters for new Trainers in the Hoenn region, is well-known for its collected nature, a trait that never leaves it even as it evolves into Grovyle and Sceptile. Once the Grass-type reaches its final form, Sceptile’s swiftness and agility has only increased, making it a formidable opponent to face in any situation. The Forest Pokémon is extremely protective of its habitat, and will fight tirelessly to defend it from those who pose as a threat to its woodland home. Like its prior forms, Sceptile will always gaze at its opponent in a calm way, its composure allowing it to keep a level head during even the toughest of fights.

Pokémon: Hoenn Region in the Manga, Explained

The Hoenn region is nostalgic for many fans of the franchise, yet the history that follows the inhabitants of the region is amplified in the manga.

Though he initially claims to not like Pokémon, Emerald, one of the heroes of the Hoenn region, soon gains a Sceptile of his very own. The Forest Pokémon, once owned by Professor Birch as a Treecko, was lost until it was rescued by Wally, who trained it into a Grovyle. After the two were separated, Grovyle evolved into Sceptile while in the wild, and was calmed by the latter after becoming enraged. As of now, the two are an ace duo, especially as Sceptile now has the power to transform into the Grass/Dragon-type Mega Sceptile.

A Hidden Mega Stone Allows the Pokémon To Use a New Power

X's Charizard evolves into Mega Charizard X while Blue's Charizard evolves into Mega Charizard Y.

Salamè, an easygoing Charmander originally owned by Professor Sycamore, was soon selected to join X’s team alongside his friend Marisso, a brave Chespin. Even after evolving into Charmeleon and then Charizard, Salamè has a habit of holding onto his tail. This trait is not expanded on until the Fire-type Pokémon finally does evolve into Charizard, during which he and X join forces with another Trainer and his own Charizard. That Trainer is Blue Oak himself, the grandson of Professor Oak and a legendary hero from the Kanto region.

During a showdown against Xerosic, the reason why Salamè always holds his tail comes to light. Safely hidden in his tail-flame is a Mega Stone, specifically a Charizardite X. Blue himself reveals to X that his own Charizard has the power to use Mega Evolution, though via a Charizardite Y instead. With these revelations now in the air, Blue and X are able to use the power of Mega Evolution to finally defeat Xerosic. With Blue’s Mega Charizard Y fighting alongside him, X’s powerful Mega Charizardite X takes the stage, now with a new classification as a Fire/Dragon-type Pokémon.

Flygon Helps Wally Reach the Top of the Sky Pillar

A Powerful Pokémon Earned From Norman

Flygon soars to the sky in the manga.

Flygon, despite it being a Ground/Dragon-type Pokémon, actually spends the beginning of its life as simply a Ground-type Pokémon. The Ant Pit Pokémon known as Trapinch is a common location on Route 111 in the Hoenn region, where sandstorms are constantly seen in the desert. Upon evolving into Vibrava, the Pokémon now becomes a Ground/Dragon-type, though it retains an insect-like appearance. Flygon, however, looks much more dragon-like compared to its prior forms, though it still keeps several traits similar to a dragonfly.

After Wally had mastered his training under Norman, the Petalburg City Gym Leader and Ruby’s father, the Normal-type Trainer gave the boy a new Pokémon, a fully evolved Flygon. As the Mystic Pokémon is able to soar through even the toughest storms, it proves to be a great ally for Wally, who is tasked with climbing the Sky Pillar. During this time, Groudon and Kyogre are waging a terrible battle against the other, a force that threatens to destroy all of Hoenn. By working together, Wally and his Pokémon, Flygon included, are able to reach Rayquaza, who descends from the sky in order to calm the rage of the other two Legendary Pokémon.

Garchomp Is Cynthia’s Legendary Partner Pokémon

A Dragon-type Feared by Many Fans

Cynthia's Garchomp from the manga.

Thanks to her incredible team and her iconic musical theme, Cynthia is perhaps the greatest Pokémon Champion in the entire franchise. Cynthia’s ace remains her very own starter Pokémon, a Garchomp that the legendary Trainer raised from an Egg when she was a child. After she hatched from the Egg, Gible and Cynthia took to training immediately, the two reaching the position of Sinnoh’s champions not too long after. Garchomp remains by Cynthia’s side to this day, their bond unbreakable and their legacy highly unlikely to be forgotten.

In the Pokémon Adventures manga, Garchomp appears alongside her Trainer and childhood friend while the heroes must battle against Cyrus and the rest of Team Galactic. After the two are unable to keep Cyrus from the Celestic Ruins, Cynthia allows Garchomp to use Draco Meteor against his own Pokémon, although the two have not mastered the move yet. Though the move is indeed powerful, it sadly is unable to keep Cyrus from escaping. In the Platinum arc, however, Cynthia and Garchomp have been tirelessly practicing their Draco Meteor attack, and are able to successfully use it against Charon and Giratina as the two tried to escape.

Lance Rescues His Dragonite From a Grim Fate

A Childhood Event That Changes the Trainer’s Perspective

Dragonite carries Lance on its back.

An exceptionally rare Pokémon to come across, Dragonite is actually a rather calm Pokémon, even selflessly searching the seas for people and other Pokémon in need of rescue during storms. However, Lance’s own Dragonite is a rather different story. Like its Trainer, the Dragon Pokémon has a fierce disposition, and is always ready for a fight. The duo is even more formidable during the events of the Yellow arc, where Lance and the rest of the Elite Four vow to dispose of humanity.

When Lance was a child, he witnessed several Pokémon become gravely ill and even die due to the effects of human-made pollution. He was able to rescue two Pokémon, those creatures being a Dratini and a Magikarp. In the present, Dragonite and Gyarados are two of Lance’s main fighters, their rage matching that of their Trainer’s. Both Pokémon have the ability to control storms, making Lance’s battles even more risky for Yellow and her allies.

Zekrom Is Summoned by N

The Sorrowful Upbringing of Team Plasma’s King

For an unknown period of time, an abandoned young boy was looked after by several wild Pokémon until he met Ghetsis, the leader of Team Plasma. Giving him the name of Natural Harmonia Gropius, Ghetsis claimed that the boy was destined to be Team Plasma’s king, and “liberate” the world’s Pokémon from their Trainers. As Ghetsis only allowed N to stay in the castle, meeting with Pokémon who had been neglected or even abused by their old Trainers, the young Trainer could only see other human beings as wicked by the time he was an adult. His storyline is one of the franchise’s most unique, a narrative that remains well-remembered by fans today.

A Darker Pokémon Anime Like Digimon Ghost Game Could Be Exactly What the Franchise Needs

The Pokemon franchise would benefit from a Horror-inspired anime, like Digimon Ghost Game.

After Black is defeated by Team Plasma, N is given the Dark Stone to hold, thus being able to summon Zekrom from its slumber. A creature who will aid those with strong ideals, Zekrom took a liking to N instantly, the two becoming one of the most powerful forces Unova had ever seen. The two were only bested by Black and Reshiram later on, as Team Plasma attempted to truly take control of the Unova region. Zekrom traveled with N for years before the events of the Black 2 & White 2 arc, after which the Deep Black Pokémon bid farewell to its friend.

Giratina Is Forced To Spend Eternity in the Distortion World

Cyrus Summons the Renegade Pokémon To Create a New Reality

Giratina uses Dragon Breath in battle.

Giratina, the Renegade Pokémon, is part of a legendary trio of Sinnoh-based Dragon-types known as the Pokémon of Myth. Unlike Dialga and Palkia, however, the Ghost/Dragon-type committed several acts of violence. Such crimes resulted in its imprisonment, locked away in the surreal shadows of the Distortion World. However, its presence and legacy intrigues Cyrus of Team Galactic to a terrible extent, so much so that he actually summons the Renegade Pokémon from its prison.

After it emerged from the Disortion World, Giratina set foot in Eterna City and began to wreak havoc. Diamond and Pearl, a pair of Trainers as well as a comedy duo, take part in the battle against the violent Renegade Pokémon. However, the ferocity of this beast proves to be a force no one could have expected. During the fight, Giratina unleashes its signature Shadow Force move against Pearl. In a shocking turn of events, Diamond takes the attack meant for his friend, leaving the boy de-materializing and transporting him to the Distortion World.

3

Reshiram Chooses Black To Fight Alongside It

A Final Showdown To Save the Unova Region

Reshiram works with Black to stop Team Plasma.

The Legendary Pokémon that represents truth itself, Reshiram, is known to align itself with those who wish to forge a world built on this very element. After Black is defeated and knocked unconscious by Team Plasma, N takes control of the Dark Stone and summons Zekrom, keen on working with the Pokémon to create an ideal world. However, N’s “ideal world” is an idea crafted by Ghetsis himself, who locked away N for years and would only tell him of the cruelty that some people would treat their Pokémon with. Because of this, N cannot understand that there are indeed Pokémon Trainers who love and care for their Pokémon, and properly treat them with kindness and understanding.

After Zekrom leaves with N, the Light Stone awakens and signals its loyalty to Black. As N has now bested the current Champion in battle, he and Zekrom are soon met by Black and Reshiram, who has emerged from its artifact state. In order to save Unova and its inhabitants, Black and N begin to duel, with Zekrom and Reshiram tirelessly fighting against the other. Though the battle is long and harsh, Black and Reshiram ultimately defeat the other duo, sparking a ray of hope for the heroes.

Kyurem Searches for a Way To Be Complete

A Special Dragon-type That Can Take On New Forms

Kyurem from the Pokémon Adventures manga.

The third Legendary Dragon-type of the Unova region, Kyurem, also holds Ice-type abilities that very few can match in strength. However, these powers are so intense that the Boundary Pokémon is frozen solid. This Pokémon is said to be an incomplete creature, awaiting the day for a hero to grant it the powers of either the truth or pure ideals. In Pokémon Adventures, one does appear to grant Kyurem its wish, but this individual is not a hero.

While Team Plasma attempts to rise up once again, Colress, the second boss of the organization, becomes fascinated with Kyurem. Working alongside Ghetsis and the rest of Team Plasma, the group manages to obtain the DNA Splicers. This tool allows Kyurem to combine with the DNA of either Zekrom or Reshiram, transforming into either Black Kyurem or White Kyurem. However, this powerful Pokémon is a force that not even Team Plasma can control, and in its rage, uses an intense Sheer Cold attack to freeze Colress solid.

Few Can Match the Power of Rayquaza

The Sky High Pokémon Vows To Protect the Planet

Hidden in the stratosphere of the earth’s atmosphere is Rayquaza, the Legendary Sky High Pokémon. True to its Pokédex classification, Rayquaza almost never leaves the vacuum of space, intent on protecting the entire planet from threats. It often clashes with the DNA Pokémon known as Deoxys because of this, as the Mythical Pokémon wishes to travel to the surface. However, even Deoxys is no match for its nemesis, who holds a mysterious aura that researchers still wish to understand. For example, while the other super-ancient Pokémon have the power of Primal Reversion, the Sky High Pokémon does not; instead, Rayquaza is able to Mega Evolve simply by knowing its signature attack, Dragon Ascent.
