The strongest X-Men are usually the ones classified as omega-level mutants. Storm and Jean Grey are among the most powerful, as well as Magneto and even Iceman. However, their powers are often unseen or conjured manifestations. Storm can manipulate the weather and Jean Grey can control minds, but neither are particularly strong.

There are some incredibly powerful X-Men whose strength comes from their physical mutations and bodies. Wolverine can heal from nearly any injury, and Colossus can turn his skin to metal, giving him near-invulnerability and super strength. Additionally, some mutants, like Morph and Darwin, can alter their very forms to become indestructible and potentially godlike, all thanks to their physically-altering mutations.

The 10 Best X-Men Costumes in Marvel History, Ranked

Over the course of the X-Men’s history, there have been some absolutely incredible costumes from some of the best characters in the Marvel Universe.

10

Emma Frost Has Diamond Skin

Emma Frost is an incredibly skilled telepath and, for the most part, that’s the mutation she shows off the most, and it’s the one the X-Men have the greatest use for. However, Emma Frost’s second mutation, one that allows her to transform her skin into organic diamond, makes her a physically powerful X-Man as well.

First Appearance

Uncanny X-Men #129

Mutation

Organic diamond form

Emma’s diamond form has its disadvantages, such as her inability to use telepathy while wearing it, but it also gives her increased strength and makes her nearly indestructible. Though it’s not her form of choice, Emma sure knows how to wear it, best exemplified in the X-Men: Hellfire Gala one-shot.

Beast Is An Animal

As one of the founding members of the team, Beast is an important X-Man. However, his intelligence sometimes overrides his humanity and better judgment. On more than one occasion, Beast’s pursuits have nearly led to the destruction of the X-Men. However, his high intelligence is not his mutation––that would be his blue fur and animalistic features.

First Appearance

X-Men #1

Mutation

Sharp teeth and claws, superhuman strength, endurance and agility

Beast’s exact mutation is hard to pin down. Beast seems to change his appearance every few years or so, though the real-world reason for that concerns Marvel’s artists and editorial teams. Beast’s physical mutation gave him teeth and claws, making him one of the most agile Marvel heroes, which he used whenever his brain failed.

Marrow Has The Sharpest, Strongest Bones

Marrow is a pretty disturbing member of the X-Men, visually. Her physical mutation allows her to manipulate her bones. She can grow armor by extending her bones beyond her skin, and she can even create all manner of jagged, sharp protrusions that can be broken off and used as weapons.

First Appearance

Cable #15

Mutation

Bone manipulation

Despite the unsettling nature of her powers, Marrow is a physically powerful X-Man. Her bone manipulation grants her many weapons, but it also makes her physically more durable. It’s hard to defeat someone who can shift their body. She can increase her bone density, and even strengthen her muscles as a result, giving her enhanced strength and speed.

Monet Is A Peak Human

Monet, a.k.a. M, is not necessarily a powerful member of the X-Men, but she is incredibly strong by human standards. Monet was a pivotal X-Men member during the House of X miniseries, when she defended Jean Grey against an army of space-traveling Sentinels during their assault on the Mother Mold space station.

First Appearance

Uncanny X-Men #316

Mutation

Peak human condition, superior strength, speed, agility and can transform into Penance

While her peak human condition and physicality often help her out on missions, Monet has the superhuman ability to alter her body, allowing the form of Penance, or Hollow, to take over. Monet’s natural mutation makes her abnormally strong and fast, but the Penance mutation makes her deadly, giving her long, sharp claws and a predatory demeanor.

6

Wolverine Has The Greatest Healing Factor

Wolverine is one of the most iconic X-Men, if not the X-Man, as Deadpool called him. His adamantium claws, three on each hand, are just as iconic, though that’s not even his mutation. Wolverine can heal from virtually any injury. The Sentinels can fry his entire body, Magneto can pull him apart, limb by limb, and Wolverine will usually find a way to survive.

First Appearance

The Incredible Hulk #181

Mutation

Advanced healing factor

He is, to put it mildly, incredibly tough to kill. Wolverine is the best he is at what he does, after all. The claws certainly help, but his regenerative healing factor keeps him going. The fact that Wolverine is nearly immortal makes him incredibly powerful––a good defense creates a better offense.

Colossus Is The X-Men’s Strong Man

Colossus is a very famous member of the X-Men, appearing on most versions of the team, debuting alongside Storm and Nightcrawler in one of the X-Men’s most famous eras. Colossus is one of the strongest members of the X-Men, even going toe-to-toe with Juggernaut on a good day.

First Appearance

Giant-Size X-Men #1

Mutation

Metal mimicry, super strength, invulnerability

Colossus’s physical mutation allows him to coat his skin in organic metal, making him nearly indestructible while also giving him super strength. Colossus is, most importantly, the muscle behind one of the X-Men’s greatest tactics: the Fast-Ball Special.

4

Elixir Has A Death Touch

Elixir debuted in the 21st century as a very powerful mutant. Elixir may not be as physically strong as someone like Colossus, but his physical mutation lets him morph his own body in incredible ways. Elixir can heal himself from almost any injury and can even return from death.

First Appearance

New Mutants (Vol. 2) #5

Mutation

Biokinesis

Additionally, Elixir has a dangerous ability called “death touch,” which is exactly as terrifying as it sounds. With one touch, Elixir can manipulate other bodies, potentially killing someone instantly. Elixir’s physical mutation doesn’t alter the strength of his body, but it does make him nearly unbeatable.

3

Darwin Can Adapt To Any Dangerous Situation

Darwin has one of the best physical mutations in Marvel Comics: he can adapt to any situation. If something harmful happens to Darwin, his mutation alters his body on a cellular level to handle the situation. Darwin is the ultimate survivor. If he needs to be indestructible, his body will create a metal shell. If he needs to grow gills to breathe underwater, he will.

First Appearance

X-Men: Deadly Genesis #2

Mutation

Reactive, protective evolution

One drawback is that Darwin can’t always control these mutations, and some come with unknown drawbacks and consequences. Regardless, as proven during Jonathan Hickman’s X-Men series in the Krakoa era, Darwin’s mutation allows him to survive almost anything and can even extend his life, making him nearly immortal and basically godlike.

2

Apocalypse Can Control Every Cell In His Body

Apocalypse is easily one of the most powerful X-Men villains. Apocalypse is an ancient mutant whose power grows every year. At base, Apocalypse has the power to manipulate his physiology, making his body stronger and even transforming his arms into weapons. And yes, Apocalypse fought alongside the Excalibur team and defended Earth during the X of Swords event, making him an official–if only temporary- X-Man.

First Appearance

X-Factor #6

Mutation

Biomanipulation, molecular manipulation

The only reason Apocalypse may not top a list of strongest X-Men with physical mutations is the fact that the mutant villain often uses Celestial technology to bolster his own power. Without godlike enhancements, Apocalypse would be far less indestructible and malleable.

There are many entertaining stories among the X-Men comics, such as the Age of Apocalypse arc, which contains unique, exciting, and memorable battles.

1

Morph Can Adopt The Powers Of All The X-Men

Present-day X-Men fans will recognize Changeling as Morph, one of the main cast members of X-Men: The Animated Series and its sequel series, X-Men ’97. In the comics, Changeling was a short-lived X-Men villain who could shapeshift and adopt the powers of any form he took. He eventually joined the team as Morph and was a main character in the X-Men: Age of Apocalypse era.

First Appearance

X-Men #35

Mutation

Shapeshifting, power mimicry

Morph may not seem that powerful at first glance, seeing as he’s a shapeshifter like Mystique. However, Morph can also essentially use any power of any person he morphs into, making him a godlike mutant who could, in theory, have the physical powers of every other mutant, superhero, or villain––the strength of Colossus, the speed of Quicksilver, and so on.

X-Men

Since their debut in 1963, Marvel’s X-Men have been more than just another superhero team. While the team really hit its stride as the All New, All Different X-Men in 1975, Marvel’s heroic mutants have always operated as super-outcasts, protecting a world that hates and fears them for their powers.

Key members of the X-Men include Professor X, Jean Grey, Cyclops, Wolverine, Iceman, Beast, Rogue, and Storm. Often framed as the world’s second strongest superheroes, after the Avengers, they are nonetheless one of Marvel’s most popular and important franchises.
