Two teenagers involved in a fiery police chase and shootout in downtown San Antonio last Thursday have died, officials say.
Nathaniel Moreno, 17, died at the scene. The passenger was identified as 15-year-old Nicholas Rodriguez and he died in the hospital.
Moreno’s cause of death was homicide, the Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office said, ruling he died of multiple gunshot wounds. A cause of death has not been determined for Rodriguez as of Tuesday.
SAPD Assistant Chief Robert Blanton said officers identified a blue Kia sedan they said had been reported stolen Thursday afternoon and followed it downtown.
Police officers attempted to stop the vehicle on Flores Street between Houston and Commerce streets, then deployed spike strips. Officers then boxed in the stolen vehicle at Commerce and Flores streets.
The driver allegedly failed to comply with the officer’s commands, Blanton said and allegedly struck patrol vehicles and drove toward the officers.
The officers discharged their firearms at the vehicle. Videos shared on social media and reported by KSAT show multiple rounds of gunfire from police.
After the shooting, the vehicle continued down Commerce Street, struck a building and caught on fire. There was no major structural damage to the building, Blanton said.
