Netflix is experiencing a series of hits on its platform, with many releases becoming very popular. Since the beginning of the year, three titles have reached Netflix’s Most Popular Lists.
One of its surprise hits is the French action thriller Ad Vitam. The series premiered on the platform on Jan. 10, 2025, and has been raking in major views since its release, dominating the non-English charts. The film’s ongoing popularity led to Ad Vitam joining Netflix’s Most Popular Non-English Movies list, per Tudum.

The limited series is loosely based on a real story.
Ad Vitam joined the list with 56 million views, and 91.5 million hours viewed. The French action thriller’s success might not end here because it’s close to replacing No. 9 on the list, the 2022 Italian film My Name is Vendetta, which has only 400,000 views more than Ad Vitam. The movie replaced the 2022 Swedish movie Black Crab, which had 53.9 million views.
The French thriller spent its fifth week on the platform in sixth place, with another 1.5 million views. It reached the top 10 in 43 countries, continuing its path of success. The movie’s high numbers don’t mean the viewers liked it, as Ad Vitam holds a “rotten” 43% approval rating from the critics, and 31% from the audience on Rotten Tomatoes.
Ad Vitam follows an ex-elite agent, Guillaume Canet’s Franck, who has to go back to his dangerous past after his pregnant wife Léo, played by Stéphane Caillard (War of the Worlds) is kidnapped. Alongside Canet and Caillard also star Nassim Lyes (Under Paris), Zita Hanrot (Lee), Johan Heldenbergh (Quo Vadis, Aida?), and Alexis Manenti (Athena). Rodolphe Lauga helmed the action thriller and co-wrote the script with David Corona and Canet.

The Emmy-winning actress Amy Schumer proves she’s still a force to be reckoned with.
Another French film slithered in the Most Popular Non-English Movies charts last year: Under Paris. The disaster shark horror film has been in the charts for 21 weeks since its premiere in June 2024, making its way all the way to the top.
2025 Was Big for Netflix’s New Titles
Ad Vitam isn’t the only new title to break it into Netflix’s Top 10 Most Popular lists recently. The first one to kick off the new popularity trend was 2024’s Carry-On, Taron Egerton’s new action film. The thriller was the biggest title of the year for Netflix, and, less than a month after its Dec. 13 premiere, hopped onto Netflix’s Most Popular Movies list in the English language.
Carry-On didn’t stop rolling after joining the list, and it kept moving and rolling until reaching the third spot. It currently sits behind two 2021 titles, Red Notice and Don’t Look Up. While reaching the top of the list is difficult unless a sequel is greenlit, the number two spot is within reach. Carry-On boasts 166.3 million views, just 5.1 million away from Don’t Look Up‘s 171.4 million.
While Carry-On wasn’t a big surprise considering its popularity and positive reviews, a different title’s rise to the charts was unexpected. The limited series La Palma became a massive hit following its Dec. 12 release, and, five weeks later, it also reached the Top 10 Most Popular Non-English Shows. The Norwegian disaster miniseries topped the charts since its release and gathered 61.9 million views when it claimed the eighth spot on Netflix’s prestigious list. The miniseries wasn’t a hit with the viewers, who gave it an abysmal 29% approval score.
Ad Vitam is available to stream on Netflix.
