Summary

  • 343 Industries changed the plot direction of Halo Infinite due to negative feedback on Halo 5: Guardians.
  • A roadmap to continue Halo 5’s story was canceled because of fan reactions, leading to unresolved character storylines.

A new rumor has suggested that 343 Industries (now Halo Studios) moved away from the plot of Halo 5: Guardians after receiving negative feedback from players. For fans who don’t read the books, the jump between Halo 5: Guardians and Infinite was jarring, but that was a price 343 Industries was willing to pay.

The overarching narrative was always a common complaint about the 343 Industries Halo trilogy. Plenty happens between games, where players must engage with other material, such as books, to keep up. While Halo 4 and 5 at least attempted to keep some semblance of narrative consistency, 343 Industries went in a completely different direction with Halo Infinite, resolving the major storyline that was set up in the previous game off-screen. This was in stark contrast to Bungie’s Halo trilogy, which told a cohesive story from start to finish.

From members of Blue Team to Noble 6, there are plenty of Spartan-IIIs and IVs that can compare to Master Chief.

According to Halo insider Rebs Gaming, a roadmap was actually created to continue the story of Halo 5: Guardians, but this was eventually canceled “because of negative reactions from Halo fans.” Unsurprisingly, the Guardians were allegedly planned to play a much more significant role going forward, but were absent from Halo Infinite. According to Rebs Gaming, they decided to share this information now due to a recent discussion about Halo 5: Guardians‘ story on Reddit, which wondered why 343 Industries had a habit of ditching concepts quickly after introducing them. They wanted to “finally provide Halo fans with confirmation that it’s a result of negative reactions from Halo fans.”

It Seems Like Halo 5: Guardians’ Plot Was Scrapped For Infinite

To this day, there are plenty of Halo characters whose story is still open-ended on the back of Halo 5: Guardians. The issue is that with Halo Infinite, the franchise has introduced even more factions and characters, and any future game will likely look to resolve storylines involving them as a priority. It just leaves the franchise feeling a little stuck. Of course, it could try to bring the Halo 5: Guardians characters back to finish their storylines, but given the time jump between the game and Infinite, this could prove difficult in a way that feels satisfying to players. Given the negative reaction to Halo 5: Guardians‘ campaign, it’s hard to imagine that Halo Studios would want to, either.

Interestingly enough, more rumors were recently circulating about the possibility of Halo 5: Guardians finally coming to PC. These rumors were quickly debunked, although many gamers still hold out hope for the title to eventually make its way to the platform. As for future games, very little is known about what Halo Studios has planned over the next few years. It will certainly be interesting to see if the studio can bring some new life to the Halo franchise after its rebrand from 343 Industries.
