The Vampire Diaries was a fantasy show that leaned heavily on romance. The relationships between vampires and humans were the biggest appeal of the CW show. These romances had many alluring elements, like their forbidden nature, the secrecy of vampirism, and the difference in natures between fragile humans and supernatural vampires.

The vampires in TVD were naturally drawn to human beings, which led to some iconic love stories. These pairs made sacrifices for each other, taught each other how to live, and learned to compromise and make things work with their limitations. These were the best human and vampire relationships on The Vampire Diaries.

Damon and Katherine Were a Fateful Pair

Katherine came to Mystic Falls under the guise of being an orphan and sought refuge in Salvatore House. By this time, she had been a vampire for many centuries, and she was instantly attracted to both the Salvatore brothers. Her bond with Damon was an intense one, as he readily accepted her vampirism and didn’t need to be compelled to drink her blood.

Damon Salvatore was born on June 18, 1839.

It was clear that Damon was devoted to Katherine, and he would do anything for her. She was his first big love, but Katherine took him for granted. While this relationship was not the healthiest, it set the ball rolling for the events that made Damon into a vampire and even hardened his heart later. He did look for Katherine for centuries, which proved the depth of his love for her.

Katherine Loved Stefan With All Her Heart

While Katherine wanted both the Salvatore brothers, it was clear that Stefan was her favorite. She seemed to love him genuinely, even though he did not fully accept her as a vampire. When they were in a relationship while Stefan was human, Katherine had to compel Stefan so that he could see her true face and even drink her blood, as he would be terrified otherwise.

Stefan and Katherine burned and died in Hellfire in Season 8, Episode 16, “I Was Feeling Epic.”

However, it was clear that she cared for him genuinely, as her feelings for Stefan never dissipated. Even when they became vampires and Katherine returned to Mystic Falls, her aim was to be together with Stefan again. Their long relationship came to a poetic end in the finale when they died together.

Anna and Jeremy Fell Deeply In Love

Pearl’s daughter, Annabelle, came to Mystic Falls to get her mother out of the tombs. She got close to Jeremy so that she could get information, but her fake interest in him turned to real feelings when she got to know Elena’s younger brother. They got close very quickly, and Anna even gave Jeremy a vial of her blood to become a vampire and live with her forever.

Anna died in Season 1, Episode 22, “Founder’s Day.”

Anna and Jeremy were very young, but their spark was not superficial. This is why they could not forget each other, even when Anna appeared to him as a ghost later on. Sadly, their relationship came to a tragic end when John Gilbert staked Anna while rounding up vampires, angry that she was involved with his nephew.

Rebekah and Matt Had a Short But Meaningful Relationship

It is safe to say that Matt Donovan was one of the most stressed-out characters in The Vampire Diaries, as he had to cope with human responsibilities, as well as the threat of the supernatural world. Rebekah initially wanted to hurt Matt but changed her mind when she saw just how kind-hearted and hard-working he was.

The first rule of truly living is to do the things you’re most afraid of.

She developed a fondness for him but could never gain his favor because of her villainous acts on The Vampire Diaries. Eventually, Rebekah gained Matt’s trust, and they entered a relationship together. She wanted to show him the joys and pleasures of life, which he had never seen because of his difficult life. They traveled together and saw the world, culminating in one of the most wholesome vampire and human relationships on the fantasy show.

Matt and Caroline Were Perfect Together

Caroline and Matt grew close when she confided in him about her innermost thoughts and feelings, but they had many unexpected challenges along the way. For starters, Katherine killed Caroline with vampire blood in her, which meant that she became a vampire sired to Damon. This was an issue for Matt and her relationship.

Matt and Caroline started dating in TVD Season 1, Episode 12, “Unpleasantville.”

Matt understood Caroline innately, which was what made them great partners. They shared several fun moments, but Caroline could not control her bloodlust around him as a new vampire. She had to pretend to be insecure and needy, which was a dealbreaker for Matt. He then broke up with her, which was heartbreaking because they were so well-matched.

Elijah Loved Katherine When She Was Human and Vampire

Katherine had the misfortune of coming to Klaus’ court as a human, which was when she learned that she was a doppelgänger. She initially believed that Klaus loved her but was shaken to the core when she found out that he intended to sacrifice her to become a Hybrid. During this time, she developed a deep bond with Klaus’ brother, Elijah.

Elijah and Katherine met in England in 1492. They reunited briefly in TVD Season 4, but the relationship did not last.

One of the biggest surprise couples in The Vampire Diaries were Enzo and Bonnie, but they worked beautifully. As enemies, they shared witty banter and jokes, which turned into something different when Enzo kidnapped Bonnie to keep her safe from the Armory. They were after her for her magic, and he wanted to protect her at all costs.

Enzo was killed in TVD Season 8, Episode 11, “You Made a Choice to Be Good.”

They spent a lot of time together in their cabin, which made them fall in love. Enzo would do anything for Bonnie, who had been through huge hardships throughout The Vampire Diaries. Eventually, the two decided that Enzo would turn human with the help of the Cure, and they would commit to living a beautiful life together. Their dreams were cut short when Stefan killed Enzo at Bonnie’s door, and the couple were left with a ghost of their relationship as Enzo’s spirit lived in the dimension Bonnie created for him.

Stefan and Elena Were Starcrossed Lovers

Stefan entered Elena’s life at a time when she was broken with the loss of her parents, and he showed her how to hope again. Granted, he was curious about her because of her resemblance to Katherine, but Stefan grew to love Elena for her heart. Both of them were warm, kind, and empathetic, and their matched values made sure that they ended up together.

Stefan and Elena were doppelgängers descended from Silas and Amara.

Elena did struggle with Stefan’s reality as a vampire, and she initially rejected him because of it. However, her feelings for him were too strong, and they came back stronger than ever. Stefan and Elena had one of the healthiest and most beautiful relationships, where they mutually respected each other and never took the other for granted. Their mutual status as doppelgängers also made them perfect, but Elena’s heart belonged to someone else.

While Elena was dating Stefan, she could not help but get drawn to Damon. At first, Damon was a rogue and a villain, but being with Elena made him want to be a better person. He let go of his old, violent ways and tried to be a compassionate man for her sake. Their attraction was undeniable when Elena was a human, but their relationship began in earnest when she became a vampire.

Elena erased all her memories of Damon when he got stuck on the Other Side in Seasons 5 and 6.
