A proposal for a seasonal touring caravan site on Anglesey, designed to diversify a local coal and gas business, is under review by Anglesey County Council.
The application, submitted by Carol Williams, seeks to develop a site near Valley, adjacent to the Bryn Hyfryd coal depot and yard for Looms Brothers.
The plans include a new access road, an amenity building, and additional infrastructure to accommodate caravans and campervans from March to October.
The proposed site spans approximately 70 acres of what is described as “underutilized agricultural land.”
Outside the operational season, the land is expected to return to its current use as grazing land.
The development also includes provisions for a single-story shower block, a small office, and a bin store. Low-level lighting and landscaping are intended to minimize environmental and visual impact.
According to planning documents, the project reflects the applicant’s aim to shift away from reliance on fossil fuels.
A statement reads: “Our clients’ intention is to diversify their business as part of a medium to long-term need to move away from a business model that is dominated by the sale of fossil fuels.
Their ambition would be to develop this site which would allow a pivot into a new and more sustainable market (both environmentally and financially) and thus to protect the jobs and economic benefits that their business offers.”
The proposed site lies on the eastern edge of the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), close to the village of Valley and the A55.
According to a report by NorthWalesLive, the application notes that the development is designed to have minimal visual impact, stating:
“The presence of tourers in occupied operational periods will be limited to glimpsed views for users of the A55. The design and content of the proposal will not damage the special qualities and features of the AONB.”
Efforts to integrate the project into the existing landscape include the addition of hedges and wetland copses to enhance the area’s character.
Council planners are expected to evaluate the proposal, balancing the need for diversification with preserving Anglesey’s natural beauty and rural environment.
