A New Short Story for Fans

Demon king and Frieren team

People that have been following the Frieren manga for a while may have already read one of Mei Hachimoku’s works. The author previously wrote a prequel novel for the series entitled Shōsetsu Sōsō no Frieren ~Zensō~ (Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End the Novel ~Prelude~). It was a 24-page novella as well, taking place before the start of the regular Frieren manga and telling five previously untold stories. It was published in April 2024. Hachimoku is also the author of the light novel The Tunnel to Summer, the Exit of Goodbye.

This latest Frieren novella is also going to be 24 pages long, entitled Sora ni Hana wo Sakaseru Mahō (Magic to Make Flowers Bloom in the Sky). No further details related to the plot have been released at the time of publishing, other than it will be released along with the 14th volume of the regular Frieren novel. Because the creator of Frieren, Kanehito Yamada, oversaw the project, the standard is expected to be high.

A Special Edition of Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End

Revolte Frieren Beyond Journey's End

The special edition of the 14th volume of Frieren will include more than just the special novella Sora ni Hana wo Sakaseru Mahō. Additionally, it will contain three new illustrations done by the illustrator of the manga, Tsukasa Abe. The special edition will also feature a special hardback, making it “feel like a grimoire” as reported by AnimeNewsNetwork.

The Frieren manga, created by Kanehito Yamada and illustrated by Tsukasa Abe, has been published since April 2020 in Shogakukan’s Weekly Shonen Sunday. It has been published in English by Viz Media since November 2021. Frieren has since been adapted into an anime that originally aired in September 2023, and impressively holds the spot for the highest rated anime of all time on MyAnimeList. A second season is slated to come out in the future.

MyAnimeList describes Frieran: Beyond Journey’s Edge as,

The Demon King has been defeated, and the victorious hero party returns home before disbanding. The four—mage Frieren, hero Himmel, priest Heiter, and warrior Eisen—reminisce about their decade-long journey as the moment to bid each other farewell arrives. But the passing of time is different for elves, thus Frieren witnesses her companions slowly pass away one by one.

Before his death, Heiter manages to foist a young human apprentice called Fern onto Frieren. Driven by the elf’s passion for collecting a myriad of magic spells, the pair embarks on a seemingly aimless journey, revisiting the places that the heroes of yore had visited. Along their travels, Frieren slowly confronts her regrets of missed opportunities to form deeper bonds with her now-deceased comrades.

While there is no official English release date for the upcoming Frieren novella, chances are high that it will have an English translation not too long after the Japanese release. Considering both the manga and the anime’s extreme popularity outside of Japan, and the continued publishing of the manga chapters in English, fans shouldn’t have to wait too long to read Sora ni Hana wo Sakaseru Mahō.

The special edition of volume 14 of Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End, including the novella Sora ni Hana wo Sakaseru Mahō, will release on March 18th.
