Akira Toriyama’s Dragon Ball is one of Shonen’s most legendary franchises. Its success is due to its fantastic storytelling, outstanding and memorable characters, and powerful fights that shake the worlds and audiences alike. There’s no doubt that Dragon Ball as a series deserves all its praise. But despite its legendary status, the series has some moments that may have never gotten into the series in the first place.

Dragon Ball is an old series, meaning a lot of it hasn’t aged well. But even more, some moments didn’t start well—some were large enough to put a bad taste in the audience’s mouths on the first watch. Many of these moments involve the female characters and crude character jokes. Including the creepiest of all, that would get Master Roshi locked up in seconds.

Roshi Eliminates A Tournament Of Power Fighter with Creepy Intimidation

Dragon Ball Super, Episode 105: “A Valiant Fight! Master Roshi’s Blaze of Glory!”

Roshi spent the entire pre-Tournament of Power preparing his mind and eliminating his lechery, a decisive moment that seemingly boosted his Power immensely. Hopefully, this also means the show will never present audiences with more of those scenes. But, a horrific undertone was present during Roshi’s fight with Caway of Universe 4.

Caway attempts to seduce Roshi, which almost works, but he manages to push past his perverted mindset and fight Caway legitimately. That is until he has her on the back foot and expresses his anger at being teased. Buffing up into his max power and reaching out with creepy quotes like,

“You’ve tried using seduction on me in this state. You…don’t blame me for what happens.”

This causes Caway to run away out of fear and eliminate herself. Stating that Roshi will make her undesirable as a wife. There are a lot of creepy undertones in this statement that the series didn’t handle well.

Goku Propositions His Female Friends For Old Kai’s Help

Dragon Ball Z, Episode 250: “Out from the Broken Sword”

The Supreme Kais are the divine species of the universe and some of the holiest beings in the galaxy. Supreme Kai, whose real name was revealed thanks to Dragon Ball DAIMA, takes his position very seriously. Even Kibito Kai carries his role with pride. This is, of course, except for Elder Kai, who is just as perverted as Master Roshi and knowingly and willingly creeps on girls with his long sight. The idea that an immortal god is peeping on women in the bathroom is creepy enough, but what’s even more creepy is when the protagonist, Goku, uses it to help them save the universe.

Old Kai says he knows a technique that could help them defeat Majin Buu, and to get that technique, Goku offers up some of his female friends as a pervy tribute for the old god, who, in the Japanese dub, specifically wants to see these girls naked. First, Goku asks for Gohan to return to Earth and asks his recently gotten girlfriend, Videl, to offer herself. It’s incredibly creepy since Videl and Gohan are both minors, but even worse, Goku offers up Bulma, a married woman, to Old Kai, who takes the deal.

Chi-Chi’s Earliest Outfit is Way Too Revealing

Dragon Ball, Episode 07: “The Ox King on Fire Mountain”

Chi-Chi is a character the series hasn’t handled well, especially in the English Dub, where her overreactions are extreme. Her mishandling started way back in the early episodes of Dragon Ball. Introduced, she has an immediate affection for Goku, which isn’t the lousy part itself; in many situations, it’s an adorable crush. Her outfit is terrible: a blue bikini with a cape and an Ultraman-inspired helmet.

Chi-Chi is also a minor in this scene, only around 11-12, so it’s strange that she’s wearing fewer clothes than when Bulma wore the Playboy Bunny suit for a decent amount of episodes. Thankfully, she drops this outfit for a far more stunning blue Cheongsam outfit that shows how she’s a mature martial artist. One has to wonder why the Ox King let her walk around in that outfit.

Otokosuki Flirts with Goten and Trunks

Dragon Ball Z, Episode 290: “Buu’s Reincarnation”

Dragon Ball has yet to have any proper homosexual representation that doesn’t border on stereotypical and dangerous. This is true with Dragon Ball‘s General Blue and, even worse, with Otokosuki, a character introduced in the final parts of the Peaceful World Saga.

In Japanese, Otoko Suki translates to “man love.”

In the 28th World Martial Arts Tournament, Otokosuki is played for creepy laughs with the homosexual trope. He flirts with Goten and Trunks and even more heavily with Trunks, who are both underage at this time.

Oolong Kidnapping Young Girls to Be His Bride

Dragon Ball, Episode 04: “Oolong the Terrible”

Goku shouts Piggy to Oolong in Dragon Ball Episode 5.

Oolong’s introduction is rough. It involves him kidnapping many young girls from the small Aru Village. Using his shape-shifting powers, Oolong can scare the villagers into offering up their daughters for their lives. The intent is that Oolong wants these underage girls to be his wife, while Oolong may be a bit underage himself, its not a good thing to know that he needs to resort to kidnapping to get with girls.

Dragon Ball: 10 Things You Didn’t Know About Oolong

Long before there were Super Saiyans and Namekians running amok, Dragon Ball’s main cast was rounded out by none other than Oolong.

Thankfully, the drama is misplaced, as Oolong is actively treating the girls well. It actually is a joke on the anime’s behalf to give a horrifying dilemna, but resolve it in a hilarious manner. However, this scene paints Oolong as a malicious pervert, which he is as he continues to act like a pervert towards the female cast like Bulma.

Oolong Acts Like a Creep Towards Bulma

Dragon Ball, Episode 06: “Keep an Eye on the Dragon Balls”

Warning for Mention of SA and Drugging

It’s weirdly impressive that Oolong is still an ally. His introduction is concerning and will be addressed later, but when he finally joins the team, the pig is a straight-up criminal to Bulma and Goku. Before giving Goku and Bulma a drink, Oolong put Sleepy Gas, essentially sleeping chemicals, in their drinks. This knocks the two out while Bulma is straight-up naked.

In the English Dub, Oolong did this to steal the Dragon Balls and a pair of Bulma’s panties. A bad enough trait on its own, but keeping in line with his obsession over them. But the Japanese dub gives him a far more nefarious goal of assaulting Bulma while she’s knocked out. The only reason he doesn’t get away with it is the accidental interference of Puar and Yamcha, who inadvertently have their own creepy moments involving Bulma.

Launch’s Beginning of Living with Master Roshi

Dragon Ball, Episode 15: “Look Out for Launch”

Launch is a fascinating character who has been forgotten in modern Dragon Ball. After rescuing Launch from the police, Goku and Roshi bring her back to Roshi’s place so they can begin his training. The Turtle Master said he wouldn’t train them until they brought a pretty girl.

Roshi then makes Launch dress in black lingerie as part of the “Master Roshi training armor.” Even creepier, he asks Goku and Krillin, two underaged boys, to do the same and gives them outfits in their sizes. He does this to make Launch feel more comfortable in the outfit, but why does Roshi have children-sized lingerie on standby? Launch then proceeds to live with Master Roshi, a known pervert who is ready to take advantage of whatever he has to get a woman.

Roshi Harasses and Assaults Android 18

Dragon Ball Z, Episode 239: “Find the Dragon Balls”

During the Buu Saga, Roshi searches for the Dragon Balls in the airship with other Z-Fighters. During the ride, Roshi accidentally falls into Android 18’s chest. At this moment, Android #18 is a mother and the wife of one of Roshi’s star students. The respectable thing would be to back away as fast as possible.

Roshi doesn’t do the respectable thing. Instead, he gropes the woman right in front of her daughter. Roshi has a tendency to assault the women his students are married to. While he gets punished for it, it’s still a creepy thing to have a teacher assault his student’s wife.

2

Oolong Turns into Bulma, So Roshi Can See Her Boobs

Dragon Ball, Episode 08: “The Kamehameha Wave”

Master Roshi stares at Bulma, in a Playboy Bunny outfit, in Dragon Ball.

To use the Bansho Fan and stop the fire at Fire Mountain, Roshi talks to Goku and gets him to agree to set up a date with Bulma. If it wasn’t clear at this point, Bulma is a minor. Roshi takes down the fire with his unique technique, the Kamehameha.

Near the end, Roshi reminds Bulma of their deal. To get off of the date, Bulma gets Oolong to turn into a copy of her and go on a date with Roshi. Oolong then shows his chest, Bulma’s, to Roshi to get the date over. Another creepy aspect is that Bulma is watching from nearby. It’s a rough scene.

Bulma Flashes Roshi for the Dragon Ball

Dragon Ball, Episode 03: “The Nimbus Cloud of Roshi”

The most iconic and infamous scene of Dragon Ball involves Bulma showing Roshi her underwear in exchange for a Dragon Ball. Bulma is obviously a minor at this point, and Roshi is a grown man—a grown man who asks to see a young girl’s underwear.

Worse, Bulma is entirely unaware that Goku has taken off her panties. Because of this, she shows Roshi everything and is entirely unaware of what she did. This scene is infamous for all the right reasons, and since it happens so early, many fans can find it a bit disgusting to get through.

The cast of Dragon Ball Z, including characters such as Son Goku, Vegeta and Piccolo, among others, leaps towards the camera in the poster for the show.
