Sokka was skeptical of Aang when they met, having no awareness of the Avatar Cycle’s power and responsibilities, but when Prince Zuko attacked the South Pole to capture Aang, Sokka knew he had to act. Sokka didn’t like how things were rapidly changing and getting weird in his eyes, but he knew his duty, and any enemy of the Fire Nation was friend of his. Sokka made a token effort to marshal the tribe’s defenses with a platoon of young warriors, but it meant little. Instead, Sokka had to fight with his own two hands. He and Katara rescued Aang from Zuko’s frigate, then fled home on Appa, headed for parts unknown.

During that phase of his life, Sokka’s worldview rapidly expanded in more than one way. He was forced to reassess his own regressive views about girls and women when the Gaang arrived at Kyoshi Island, a place of female fighters who wielded metal fans in battle. During that time, Sokka did whatever he could to aid his friends in battle at places like Omashu and an abandoned Earth Kingdom town when facing Azula, and then Toph Beifong joined the team. Finally, Sokka returned to the fore as the group explored the great central desert with professor Zei in tow. To everyone’s surprise, Sokka wanted to visit Wan Shi Tong’s library, since he wanted to find a detailed map of the Fire Nation, only to realize Firebenders had already destroyed everything in the library pertaining to the Fire Nation. Then, Sokka found a parchment fragment that changed everything.

Sokka was intrigued by “the darkest day in Fire Nation history,” and used the planetary calendar room to determine that the darkest day involved a solar eclipse, which shut off all firebending. While Wan Shi Tong went on a rampage to sink his library, Sokka hurried to find the next eclipse’s date, and secured that information right before the Gaang escaped. Later, after escaping the desert, Sokka reunited with Suki in the Serpent’s Pass, where he rushed to her defense over every trivial thing. Sokka was compensating for his loss of Yue, terrified that he might lose Suki as well. Sokka explained himself to Suki, and the two felt closer, but they stopped short of a kiss.

During his time in the Fire Nation, Sokka began to feel inadequate as the group’s only non-bender, leading him to practice swordplay with a local master of the blade, a man named Piandao. Sokka impressed Piandao with his creative thinking and even forged a new sword from a meteorite’s ore, impressing Piandao in the process. Then, after facing Piandao in a sparring match, Sokka was given a single Pai Sho tile, which was a hint of Piandao’s membership in the White Lotus organization. Sokka departed feeling more empowered and skillful than ever.

Sokka’s next adventure took him to the Fire Nation capital as his planned invasion launched, with the aid of diverse allies like the swamp’s Waterbenders, Jet’s friends, Hakoda’s fleet, Earthbender athletes, Teo, and more. At one point in the fighting, Hakoda got injured, so Sokka assumed leadership of the invasion, and he excelled in that role. Sokka led the charge right to the Fire Nation royal palace, but when Aang returned and explained the Fire Lord’s absence, Sokka adjusted to plan B. Little is known of Sokka’s adult life in the cartoons, but fans did see him in a flashback sequence in The Legend of Korra. When Sokka and his original Gaang friends were in their early 40s, Sokka was a member of Republic City’s council, and he presided over the criminal trial of Yakon, a bloodbender who had been terrorizing the city’s underworld. While the nature of Yakon’s bloodbending was difficult to believe, Sokka spoke from experience when he said the world is filled with strange things and unusual benders, showing how open-minded he had become. That attitude, combined with other evidence, convinced Sokka to find Yakon guilty and sentence him to life in prison.
