Cape Lookout State Park in Oregon has postponed its planned construction closure to fall 2025, allowing summer campground reservations to remain open.
Originally slated to close in spring 2025, the park’s adjusted schedule provides an opportunity for visitors to book stays in the popular coastal destination during the upcoming season.
Reservations for campsites in A, B, C, and D loops, along with deluxe cabins and yurts, will open for booking at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 21, for stays starting May 31 through the current six-month reservation window.
This update restores access for thousands of outdoor enthusiasts who frequent the park each summer, offering relief to visitors eager to enjoy the site’s scenic oceanfront and forested trails.
The construction is part of a broader initiative funded by Oregon-issued general obligation bonds approved by the state legislature in 2021.
Cape Lookout is one of nine projects under this funding, which aims to address critical infrastructure needs across Oregon State Parks. The planned improvements seek to enhance visitor safety and preserve the park’s long-term usability.
Originally, the project included plans to move camp loops A and B to higher ground to avoid encroaching seawater. However, unforeseen geological and safety concerns made the relocation unfeasible.
As a result, the project’s focus shifted to reinforcing and extending the life of existing infrastructure while addressing immediate vulnerabilities.
According to an article published by 1190 Kex News Radio, key improvements now include reinforcing the existing dune to prevent seawater intrusion into the camp loops.
Additionally, upgrades to the electrical and water systems in C and D loops will address maintenance issues. These updates aim to balance ecological preservation with modernized facilities for future visitors.
Day-use areas will also see enhancements, including improved accessibility and amenities for visitors. Plans to replace the aging restroom and shower facilities are expected to provide a more comfortable experience while addressing sustainability and functionality concerns.
Construction work is set to begin in fall 2025 and is anticipated to extend into the spring or summer of 2026.
During this period, both the campground and the day-use areas will be closed to ensure the safety of visitors and the efficiency of the construction process.
