Reese Witherspoon learned the hard way that some jokes are no laughing matter.

“It haunts me, it literally haunts me,” the actress shared in a recent interview with PEOPLE about a comedic awards speech that went wrong. “So this friend of mine, who I didn’t really know that well, but she was a very serious, proper actress. She asked me to give her an award, but I had never been to this award ceremony, so I thought it was like a roast. So I got up and I roasted her.”

“But that was not the tone,” her You’re Cordially Invited costar Will Ferrell guessed. To which Witherspoon replied, her head hung in good-humored shame, “No.”

“The tone was British, elegant, classy,” Witherspoon explained, “and I was like, ‘Remember the time we got laser hair removal?'”

The Legally Blonde actress said she’s “still embarrassed about it,” adding that she and the unnamed actress are “not friends anymore. I’m not even kidding — we’re not friends anymore! I think she doesn’t like me anymore. I thought it was so funny and it was just, I had the wrong audience. It was pretty bad. Not even kidding, she doesn’t talk to me anymore. Oh well.”

Reps for Witherspoon did not immediately respond to Entertainment Weekly‘s request for comment.

Witherspoon didn’t identify the actress, but she has become known for her public friendships with other high-profile actresses, particularly her group friendship with her Big Little Lies castmates Nicole KidmanZoë Kravitz, Shailene Woodley, and Laura Dern.

As of 2019, the actresses confirmed they maintained an active group chat, with Kidman saying she’s fond of emojis and Witherspoon saying she “likes a gif.” Witherspoon even delivered a tribute to Kidman last year ahead of her being honored with an AFI Life Achievement Award that included a spot-on Kidman impression.

Witherspoon has opened up about her anxiety around public speaking before. She wrote a post for Sheryl Sandberg’s blog in 2013 that explained that while “speaking in character on a crowded movie set” was never a problem, “giving a speech” in front of an impartial crowd used to be a prospect that “terrified” her.

But it’s a fear she’s since conquered, writing that she’s become “a firm believer that action can solve so many worries, and just powering through, no matter what, can give you the confidence you need when you feel like you’ve got nothing to offer.”
