The Toxic Avenger: Eyewitnesses Describe the Monster Hero’s Bloodshed and Chaos in Gory Clip
A new clip from the upcoming Peter Dinklage-starrer remake of Troma’s classic The Toxic Avenger highlights promised gore and violence.
Written and directed by Macon Blair, the reboot is based on the original 1984 film of the same name. The first film, directed by Michael Herz and Lloyd Kaufman of Troma Entertainment, is a beloved cult classic. It told the story of a meek janitor who falls into a barrel of toxic waste after a cruel prank, resulting in a transformation that turns him into a “monster.” With his newfound superhuman strength, he become a vigilante known as the “Toxic Avenger,” violently confronting the local lawbreakers. It’s as wild as it sounds, but that’s why fans love it, and the movie spawned three sequels.
The Toxic Avenger Gets Reimagined
Blair’s version of the film has a similar premise with some key differences. Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones) stars as Winston Gooze, a janitor who becomes the monster hero after he’s exposed to toxic chemicals. The reboot puts another element to the story by imagining Winston as a father who’s trying to save his relationship with his son while battling local criminals and corrupt CEOs. It’s also described as bonkers but in an enjoyable way, compared to the violently whimsical carnage of The Simpsons‘ fictional cartoon series, The Itchy & Scratchy Show.

Tromaville’s very own grotesque superhero once got the Saturday morning cartoon treatment, and it helped keep the Toxic Avenger’s legacy alive.
“[The film has] Itchy & Scratchy-type violence,” Blair told Empire. “We’ve got a guy that gets his head stuffed in a car engine and it kind of grinds his head up. That was a gag I was fond of… I kept expecting Legendary to say, ‘This is not what we want,’ but they kept agreeing to the things I pitched, [which] embraced the silliness and trashiness, while wanting it to be an enjoyable, crowd-pleasing, rock ’n’ roll fun time.”
Eljiah Wood is among the stars of the Toxic Avenger reboot, playing a role that has him almost looking unrecognizable. The film also stars Luisa Guerrero, Jacob Tremblay, Taylour Paige, Sarah Niles, Julia Davis, Jane Levy, and Kevin Bacon. Kaufman and Herz returned to serve as producers on the project alongside Mary Parent and Alex Garcia.
The Toxic Avenger will be released on Aug. 29, 2025.
