The FireAid concert was stacked with some of the biggest names in music, but the reunion of the seminal rock band Nirvana came as a big surprise.

Surviving members Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic, and Pat Smear performed at the Kia Forum on Thursday night ahead of headliner Red Hot Chili Peppers, and they were joined onstage by several women who replaced the late lead singer Kurt Cobain on vocals.

St. Vincent joined the band for “Breed,” followed by Kim Gordon singing “School” and Joan Jett rocking through “Territorial Pissings.” But the biggest surprise was Grohl’s 18-year-old daughter Violet performing a melodic cover of “All Apologies” for the set closer. The performance ended with Grohl and his daughter singing in unison before the drummer stood up and put his hands together, smiling proudly at her.

This wasn’t the first time Jett, St. Vincent, or Gordon performed with Nirvana — the musicians also performed with them in 2014 during the band’s Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony. At that event, Lorde also performed vocals. The inclusion of all-women singers led to the nickname “Hervana,” and it stuck.

The Jan. 30 FireAid event in Los Angeles, which raised money for wildfire relief, also saw Billie EilishOlivia RodrigoLady Gaga, and more perform across two venues in the city. Dave Matthews, who was originally scheduled to perform, dropped out due to a family illness.

Over at the Intuit Dome, Lady Gaga sang “Shallow” from A Star is Born, Stevie Wonder sang “Superstition” with Sting, and Billie Eilish sang her Grammy-nominated song “Birds of a Feather” with brother Finneas.

Other notable performances at the Kia Forum included Stevie Nicks singing “Edge of Seventeen” and “Landslide”; No Doubt singing “Don’t Speak; and Joni Mitchell giving an emotional rendition of “Both Sides Now.”
