Selena y Los Dinos is no longer available to view via Sundance’s online film festival portal.

The documentary, which had its world premiere at the annual festival last weekend, was pulled from the virtual platform, which allows virtual and hybrid pass holders to participate in the festival online, on Friday afternoon. A statement from the festival explained the need to remove the documentary due to copyright infringement.

“The Sundance Film Festival and the creative team of Selena y Los Dinos are sorry to inform our viewers that the film has suffered a series of copyright infringements and must therefore be removed from the Sundance Film Festival online platform,” the statement reads. “We regret that you will no longer be able to access the film on the platform.”

“We acknowledge and regret that this may cause disappointment,” the statement continue. “However part of our commitment to advocating for independent filmmakers is ensuring that they can protect their art that they have created and earn a living — now and in the future. We take copyright infringement extremely seriously and intend to fully cooperate with local, state, and federal law enforcement.”

The documentary examines the life and work of Selena Quintanilla, the “Queen of Tejano Music.” Using never-before-seen footage from her family’s personal archive, the film chronicles Quintanilla and her family band, Selena y Los Dinos, rise from performing at quinceañeras to selling out stadium tours. The doc celebrates the legacy of Quintanilla, who was murdered in 1995.

Reportedly, followers of Quintanilla’s music, who remain a quite rabid fan-base, were recording one-to-three minute segments from the documentary and sharing it on Instagram and TikTok.

Earlier on Friday, the film was named one of the award recipients of the Sundance Film Festival. It was awarded the U.S. Documentary Special Jury Award for Archival Storytelling, honoring director Isabel Castro and producers Julie Goldman, Christopher Clements, J. Daniel Torres, David Blackman, and Simran Singh.

“This award goes to a film that transported us to a specific time and place, evoking themes of family, heritage, love, and adolescence,” reads the jury citation. “The power of the story speaks to the essential nature of the archive — employed in this film to chart the emergence of a once-in-a-generation talent. The winner of the U.S. Documentary Special Jury Award for Archival Storytelling goes to Selena y Los Dinos.”
