Netflix has a massive year set for 2025 with the return of shows like Stranger Things and Squid Game, alongside debuting movies such as The Electric State. One crime thriller that will be gracing the streaming service this year is You, a series that is finally reaching its conclusion after initially launching in 2018. Fans have gone on quite the journey with Joe since their introduction to him, and his list of victims is growing ever longer. But with loose threads to tie up, characters to potentially kill, and perhaps even redemption arcs to fulfill, April 24th simply can’t come soon enough. Netflix is well aware that You will be one of its main events and is building hype for the series slowly, by dropping teasers and tidbits of news before eventually going on a full marketing drive. Regardless, the information that has been released thus far is still plenty to go on.

You Season 5 has indeed received a teaser trailer very recently, unveiling a first look at how the show will be playing out over its 10-episode run. Netflix has made a habit of splitting up popular releases in recent years, with Cobra Kai becoming one of the latest to get that treatment. However, the streaming platform has confirmed that all episodes of You will be found on the platform all at once, meaning fans can stream the show in its totality, as the creators intended. Luckily, for those who feel April is a little too far away, there are now casting confirmations, changes in the creative team, and storyline updates to break down, as the road to the first installment continues. You has the tough task of actually bringing its journey to a satisfying close after a period of critical acclaim, and so audiences will be keeping a close eye on how the production develops.

You’s Story Is Coming to an End in Season 5

Joe’s Fate Is Yet to Be Decided

The latest You season 5 teaser trailer has led to widespread speculation as to what the final season could be all about. It showcases Joe trapped within the very containment facility that he has kept his own victims in before, seemingly getting to know someone new. It appears there may be a new killer on the scene, someone that Joe feels a connection with, as he has so often before. However, with this being the final season of the show, fans are suggesting that it will not lead to a happy ending for the serial murderer. It would be darkly poetic, after all, for Joe to meet a fate similar to those he previously killed.

The upcoming Netflix film has been in production for a long time.

It has also been confirmed that Joe will be returning to New York after a period of absence. While he will be bringing some of his life from London into this latest season, it also appears that he will be haunted by the sins of his American past. Although he attempts to live peacefully, perhaps even trying to give up all the danger and rage of his previous identity, as is always the case, this calm will not last long. His new life is threatened by an unknown threat, resulting in the character having to adapt to his changing conditions, in a bid to maintain the normalcy he has fought so hard to achieve.

Those who were paying attention will remember that Kate also moved to New York with Joe, at the end of Season 4, meaning the character will have a huge part to play in this latest outing. That relationship appeared to be going from strength to strength, but fans are worried about Kate’s fate, considering what has happened to many of Joe’s past relationships. Kate is trying to rehabilitate Joe’s image while running the business that her father left behind, but that puts a lot of pressure on the couple and could lead to a rather explosive fallout.

Fans should rest assured knowing that You Season 5 has been filmed in its entirety. Production began in late March of 2024 and ran until August. That gives the team plenty of time to put together the edit and even film any last mini reshoots, just in case there’s footage missing; although there are no reports of this as of yet. What’s more, the show has filmed everything in New York, at least as far as the reports suggest, which means that there is likely no return to London as many might have expected. The show is set to conclude where it all began.

The Creative Team Is Set

Production Has Already Concluded

You might be heading for familiar territory in choosing its location, but that doesn’t mean that everything is staying the same. In fact, there has been a major creative change behind the scenes, which could influence the shape the final season takes. Sera Gamble was previously a showrunner on the series and a co-creator of You; however, she stepped away from Season 5, leaving a massive hole to fill. Luckily, another duo of talented artists have stepped up to take the reins and hopefully guide You into a finale that fans will remember forever.

Michael Foley has been confirmed as one-half of this killer team. The producer and writer has worked on every season of You since 2018 and has credits such as The Flight Attendant, Revenge and Unforgettables under his belt. He should bring a sense of continuity to the final season, his years of experience on the show shaping its end. He is joined by Justin W. Lo, who joined the You team in 2019. No Tomorrow, Glamorous and Prodigal Son all help to complete his impressive résumé, which should give fans confidence about what Lo is bringing to the table.

The writing team is a lot more varied. While both showrunners will be lending their own creative talents to the series, others have come on board to flesh out the rest of the run. Some of those names include Hillary Benefiel, who worked on the previous season, Kelli Breslin of Dead Boy Detectives fame, Doom Patrol’s Neil Reynolds, Season 4’s Maren Caldwell, The Flight Attendants’ Kara Lee Corthron, Dylan Cohen from It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia, The Diplomat’s Amanda Johnson-Zetterström, and Monarch’s Leo Richardson.

It has also been confirmed that a team of talented directors is on hand to bring these scenes to life. They include Marcos Siega, who actually worked on the very first season of You, Pete Chatmon, who made his mark on The Flight Attendant, and Erica Dunton, who helped frame the comedic genius that is Ted Lasso. The composer for the season is still yet to be named, however, but with Christopher Hoyt Knight helping out on the show since 2019, it is safe to assume that his influence will be felt all over the latest iteration.

New Cast Members Round Out the Ensemble

As fans might have guessed, Penn Badgley is returning for the final season, to resume his performance as Joe. Penn brings the series together and is such an integral part of its success. Joining him from Season 4 will be Charlotte Richie, who will be portraying Kate as she gets to grips with her new life in New York. It seems the show will totally revolve around this duo as the leads. Tati Gabrielle will also make a comeback as Marienne Bellamy in a guest appearance role, suggesting that other legacy characters will be making an appearance from You’s history.

Netflix’s American Primeval has a disturbingly violent ending that reminds fans not all Westerns and American Frontier tales have happy conclusions.

As is traditional, a new ensemble will also be brought into the mix, with Madeline Brewer’s Bronte potentially acting as a new love interest. Brewer is a mainstay on Netflix in shows like Orange Is The New Black and Black Mirror, and she’ll be a perfect addition to the complex drama. She’s joined by Anna Camp, who will be playing two sisters, having cemented her legacy already with franchises like True Blood and Pitch Perfect. Griffin Matthews, as seen in She-Hulk, will also make his debut, to complete the main line-up.

The wider cast includes Natasha Behnam, Pete Ploszek, Tom Francis, Frankie DeMaio, and, excitingly, Nava Mau, who recently made a mark in Baby Reindeer. There is still so much more to learn about what Season 5 of You will have to offer, but with the release date getting closer, fans should expect to see a proper trailer, detailing the narrative and highlighting this fantastic cast in the near future. For now though, fans will have to await those developments and make sure to tune into Netflix in April to be able to witness Joe’s final chapter. With no spin-off shows seemingly on the horizon, this truly is a goodbye for the franchise.
