If an asteroid were approaching, most would want to be with their loved ones — but the first responders of 9-1-1: Lone Star don’t get that luxury.

Last week’s episode of the Fox drama ended with an asteroid hitting Austin (a cinematic disaster inspired by a real-life destructive meteor strike!). But Monday’s series finale will rewind a few minutes to show how the members of the 126 spent their final moments before impact.

In a season 5, episode 12 preview clip exclusive to Entertainment Weekly, TK (Ronen Rubinstein) and Carlos (Rafael Silva) share one last phone call as the EMT remains on duty at the station and the Texas Ranger is assigned to cover the 9-1-1 call center,

“No goodbyes,” Carlos tells TK, as the husbands instead focus their conversation on not being cleared by a social worker to adopt TK’s half-brother Jonah before ending the call with “I love you.”

Tarlos weren’t cleared to adopt because their lines of work were deemed too dangerous, and the social worker didn’t want to put Jonah in jeopardy of losing more parental figures in his life. On the call, TK tells Carlos, “I actually have the perfect response for that.” Could the EMT be thinking about leaving his profession?

First he’ll have to survive the asteroid…and that pesky potential nuclear meltdown that was teased at the top of last week’s episode.

“This could be the event where maybe somebody in the team doesn’t make it,” Rob Lowe — who plays TK’s father, Owen, — tells EW, adding that everyone was “on the table” as the Lone Star team decided who will live through the show’s final disaster.

“This is a show where it’s totally organic on any given day that any one of these characters could have something really bad happen to them,” Lowe continues. “I mean, that’s not pushed reality — it’s the reality of what first responders go through. So we were debating, ‘Do we want to push that button…and for who?'”

“This is the end of the show,” adds co-showrunner Rashad Raisani. “So the questions are: What’s going to happen with Mateo and his [citizenship] status? Are TK and Carlos going to be able to adopt Jonah? Is Owen going to survive? And if he does, where does he go? I think those are the fundamental questions. And of course, what if, Tommy…I hope we left some questions in people’s minds that they’ll want to come back one more time and see how it ends.”

The 9-1-1: Lone Star series finale airs Monday, Feb. 3, at 8 p.m. ET on Fox.
