A conservative student group, College Republicans United, held a tabling event at Arizona State University on Friday encouraging students to report their undocumented peers to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. But the group encountered over 700 protesters, AZ Central reported.
College Republicans United, which identifies itself as Christian nationalist, promoted the event on social media, sparking outrage among Democratic state lawmakers and immigrant rights groups.
“We will be tabling on campus asking fellow students to report their criminal classmates to ICE for deportation,” the group posted on X. The post included a link to a tip form from ICE’s website for those who “can’t wait until Friday and need to make a report RIGHT NOW.”
A few days after the group announced the event, university leaders wrote in a statement that they disagreed with the approach but the group had a right to free speech.
“Encouraging ASU students to make indiscriminate complaints to law enforcement about fellow students is not in keeping with the principles which underlie our academic community,” the statement read. “We are here to teach and learn—not to engage in self-aggrandizing conduct meant solely to generate as much media attention and controversy as possible. But we must also recognize that we live in a country that protects individual free speech, even speech that is hurtful.”
Hundreds of protesters marched around the group’s lone table, chanting slogans in support of immigrants, and the group left after an hour, AZ Central reported.
