The suspects who drove a vehicle over the gravesites of around two dozen people at a West Side San Antonio cemetery have still not been identified, police said.
A video of a blue SUV trespassing and driving at a fast speed over the graves went viral on social media last week with hundreds of thousands of viewers.
It happened at the San Fernando II Cemetery, a privately-owned, Catholic cemetery owned by the Archdiocese of San Antonio.
The San Antonio Police Department, which polices cemeteries across the city, said that someone had called cemetery management to report someone driving over gravesites.
SAPD said that person also called the police to file a report and document the situation, but no further action was taken.
If there is no damage, driving over graves at a privately-owned cemetery is technically not a Texas law violation, SAPD said.
SAPD will be increasing patrols in the streets and neighborhoods around the cemetery.
The license plate on the vehicle driving over the graves isn’t visible in the video posted Feb. 18.
The Archdiocese of San Antonio told the San Antonio Report on Tuesday that the car drove over the southern portion of the cemetery, and that calls started coming in about the incident last week.
“Staff members inspected the area … and found no damage to either the gravesites or headstones,” said Jordan McMorrough, director of communications for the archdiocese.
SAPD said tips about similar incidents should be reported to the archdiocese’s office so that it can follow-up with SAPD.
