Now 22 years after their unforgettable onstage Oscars kiss, Adrien Brody and Halle Berry are both set to attend the 2025 Academy Awards.

Brody is expected to show as a nominee for Best Actor for The Brutalist, while Berry is among the stars announced as the ceremony’s presenters. Though they’re unlikely to share the stage during Sunday’s proceedings, it’s hard to think about either performer at the Oscars without recalling Brody’s impromptu lip-lock with the actress at the 2003 ceremony.

Berry won Best Actress for Monster’s Ball in 2002, and, in keeping with Oscars tradition, she returned to the ceremony the following year to present the category for the opposite gender. “If you’re known by the company you keep, tonight’s recipient of the Oscar for Best Performance by an Actor will be known as a major, major player,” Berry said as she introduced a video montage of every past Best Actor winner, from Emil Jannings to Denzel Washington.

The actress then announced Brody as the winner. At just 29 years old, he became the youngest Best Actor winner in Oscars history for his work in Roman Polanski‘s The Pianist, beating out previous Oscar winners Nicolas Cage, Michael Caine, Daniel Day-Lewis, and Jack Nicholson to take home the statue.

After hugging his mother, photographer Sylvia Placy, Brody approached the stage and ran to the podium — where he embraced Berry and kissed her on the lips for several seconds, while dipping her and holding her head. “I bet they didn’t tell you that was in the gift bag,” he said to the X-Men actress as he began his speech. The broadcast then cut to Berry looking slightly confused and wiping her lips.

Berry pulled a similar stunt — which some viewed as an intentional joke referencing the Brody incident — when she kissed Jamie Foxx as he presented her with with the Decade of Hotness award at Spike TV’s 2009 “Guys Choice” Awards.

Brody briefly touched on the kiss while reflecting on his Oscar win during a 2015 interview with Vanity Fair. “That sure was probably one of the most memorable moments ever,” he said. “You could say time slowed down. That was that moment where I really, really felt it slow down. In fact, it must have, because by the time I got finished kissing her, and people kinda settled in, they were already flashing the sign that said, ‘Get off the stage, your time is up.'”

Retrospective pieces analyzing the smooch have criticized the incident for its apparent lack of consent — and Berry confirmed that she was caught off guard by the kiss in a 2017 interview with Watch What Happens Live. “That was not planned. I knew nothing about it,” she said. “I was like, ‘What the f—‘s happening right now?’ That is what was going through my mind. And because I was there the year before and I know the feeling of being out of your body, I just f—ing went with it. But I was like, ‘What the f— is going on right now?”

After host Andy Cohen asked her how the kiss was, Berry responded, “I don’t know — I was too focused on what the f— is going on right now! I don’t even know.”

Brody looked back at the incident in an interview with Variety earlier this month. “We live in a very conscious time, which is a wonderful thing,” he said. “And nothing that I ever do or have done or would’ve done is ever done with the intention of making anyone feel bad.”

There doesn’t seem to be any bad blood between the two actors, as Berry congratulated Brody in the comment section of his Instagram post celebrating his Golden Globe win for Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama in January. “Congratulations my friend. You are truly one of one!” she wrote.

Berry and Brody probably won’t interact on the Oscars stage this year, as last year’s Best Actress winner, Emma Stone, is likely to present Best Actor, where Brody is nominated alongside Timothée Chalamet, Colman Domingo, Ralph Fiennes, and Sebastian Stan. But stranger things have happened!

The 97th Oscars begin at 7 p.m. ET/4 p.m. PT on ABC/Hulu on Sunday, March 2.
