The All India Bar Examination (AIBE), approved by the Bar Council of India (BCI) on April 30, 2010, is mandatory for law graduates from the 2009-2010 academic year onwards.

Graduates must enrol as advocates under Section 24 of the Advocates Act, 1961, before appearing for the exam. The AIBE aims to raise the standard of the legal profession and is essential for those intending to practice law.

The exam, conducted twice a year across 50 cities in India, is an open-book test assessing basic legal knowledge and analytical skills. Upon passing, candidates receive a Certificate of Practice, allowing them to practice in any court in India. The exam features multiple-choice questions and is completed in three and a half hours.

Initially, candidates are provisionally enroled and must pass the AIBE within two years, but they can attempt the exam multiple times. Provisional enrolment allows practice during this period, with seniority counted from the enrolment date.
