Aidy Bryant is still laughing about a mishap during one Saturday Night Live sketch that left her in stitches.

In a somewhat rare goof for the long-running comedy show, during a sketch called “Inside the Beltway” on Sept. 28, 2019, a crew member accidentally entered the shot to help Bryant with a wardrobe change and a giggle fit ensued.

“That was a sketch that was kind of built around these live quick changes where we were changing clothes mid-sketch during these really quick packages. And I mean, in some ways it’s almost like they’re writing that in hopes that something like that will happen because it’s so on a razor’s edge,” the SNL alum tells Entertainment Weekly while chatting about her stint as Independent Spirit Awards host this weekend.

During the sketch, also featuring Cecily Strong, Kenan Thompson, and episode host Woody Harrelson, a woman approaches and begins to grab Bryant’s blazer as the comedian shakes her head and tries to stifle laughter.

“Audrey, who was my dresser, was such a close friend of mine, so there’s a way where seeing her face in that moment was like, oh no. It’s almost like seeing your sibling or something in trouble,” Bryant explains. “So that was kind of part of what was going on there, and it was just a complete mistake. Someone told her ‘Go’ and she was like, ‘Okay, here I go.’ But I kind of gently touched her arm and shook my head, no, but it was too late.”

A few seconds after the goof, the shot cuts away for the actual wardrobe change. But when Bryant is back on screen, she cannot contain her laughter, while Strong can also be heard laughing next to her.

“I had all these long serious lines afterwards that I was supposed to say and I was like, I can’t get these out,” she recalls.

Bryant says once the camera was no longer rolling, she and Aubrey shared a hardy laugh. “I think she was a little worried, ‘Am I in trouble?’ But of course not. She’s a legend,” the Shrill star says.

She admits that sometimes she was the one provoking laughter from colleagues, especially on “Weekend Update” where she showed up as Mother Earth, Travel Expert Carrie Krum, the fan-favorite Trend Forecasters with Bowen Yang, and even herself at times. “I was always sort of pinching Michael Che or touching Colin [Jost] or whatever, because there’s a looseness to those [bits] that I think it’s fun to try and get them to break, and you’re so in absurd character that it’s kind of fun to push them a little bit,” she says.

Bryant was on the SNL cast for 10 seasons, joining in 2012 and exiting in 2022 along with costars Kate McKinnonKyle Mooney, and Pete Davidson. She scored three Emmy nominations during her time on the cast.

“It was like college and graduate school for me,” she says of her tenure at SNL. “I learned so much and, honestly, I had never been on camera when I first started the show. It’s such a long, crazy journey to go on. It feels like home.”

Watch Bryant host the 2025 Film Independent Spirit Awards on Saturday, Feb. 22, at 5 p.m. ET/2 p.m. PT on the IMDb and Film Independent YouTube and X channels.
