The best antidote to cabin fever might just be embracing the cozy — in an actual cabin, ironic as it sounds. Now, if only you had one of your own to hibernate inside and watch the snow fall all winter long. Well, as it turns out, Amazon is selling that very fantasy (in a way) with an all-wood, 108-square-foot cabin that will let you live out your hygge dreams. And it costs less than $10,000.
Allwood Escape Tiny Cabin
The seller, Allwood, is a Florida-based supplier that imports tiny home-building kits primarily from Scandinavia and the Baltic States, according to the website. This particular Escape Cabin embodies quality and minimalism with a wide-open plan and double tongue-and-groove building pattern. Measuring about 12 feet wide and 9 feet deep, the off-grid cabin is made of real Nordic spruce at a standard thickness of 1.75 inches. You have to add your own insulation and heat to make it winter-proof.
Reviewers who have tried the home themselves say it’s a great starter kit, ripe for electric, interior walls, and plumbing. Allwood even sells additional wall planks and an exterior awning (currently unavailable) as optional add-ons. The house already comes with a door, window, and covered entrance, as the gabled roof extends about four feet past the front wall.
At the Allwood website, several people reviewed this cabin, with customers using it as a home office, a “she shed,” and even an island escape. “We wanted to have a little bunkhouse/shed on Frye Island, Maine. After a bit of research and some excellent customer service from Robin, we decided on the Escape,” wrote one person. “It was the right size, was awfully cute and had an overhang perfect for sheltering us from a little drizzle.”
When it comes to assembly, the website says that it will take at least two people and about three days of work — you are constructing a house, after all! One Amazon reviewer also cautioned that you may need to buy extra materials, such as a base for the cabin, roofing tiles, and weather stain or paint.
Out of 450 people who have rated the company on Amazon, about 350 have given Allwood five stars. Read on for more Allwood cabins to fuel your hygge dreams, including one that’s four times the size of the Escape.
Allwood Arlanda XL Cabin
More of a boxy mid-century modern design, the Arlanda XL cabin measures 227 square feet and comes with an interior wall you can put wherever you want. The tall picture windows are a highlight, letting natural light in and offering superior views of the winter scenery outside. The vertical layout of the wooden panels and flat roof add to the contemporary aesthetic.
Allwood Timberline Cabin
One of Allwood’s largest cabins on offer, the Timberline measures 483 square feet and has space for three rooms — as in, a living room, bedroom, and bathroom — plus a 129-square-foot loft. The traditional gabled roof extends over a 5-by-23-foot front porch, creating the picture of bucolic comfort.
