One of the most obscure super soldiers in the history of Marvel Comics is back in action, and he just saved Captain America’s life.
Sam Wilson: Captain America #2 opens to find the titular hero locked in a bout of brutal combat against the head of Eaglestar International, Robert Maverick, who just so happens to be a Red Hulk. With the odds stacked so high against him, it is only a matter of time before Sam is locked up beside Joaquin Torres, aka the Falcon. Luckily for them, they aren’t the only ones who have had their eye on Eaglestar’s malevolent machinations, and it is only a matter of time before Josiah Bradley, better known as Shadow Soldier, has come to lend his fellow heroes a hand.

Introduced back in 2003’s The Crew #1 by Christopher Priest and Joe Bennett, the man who would become the modern-day Shadow Soldier was born Josiah Bradley, the son of Faith Bradley and her husband, the fabled lost Captain America himself – Isaiah Bradley. Or rather, Faith and Isaiah served as the genetic templates for Josiah, who was born to an unknown surrogate mother as part of a clandestine program to recreate the original Super Soldier Serum. When the woman discovered why she was selected to give birth to the boy and what his true purpose was, she escaped with the infant Josiah and left him under the best circumstances she could.
After growing up in a Catholic orphanage believing he had been abandoned by both his parents and God, Josiah lashed out at one of the nuns. Believing he had killed her, he embarked upon a career in the military, lying about his age in order to escape his tormented childhood. Over the years, Josiah went from being a soldier to a mercenary for hire to a devout Muslim, the latter of which drove him to return home and confess for his past crimes. What Josiah discovered was a kind, elderly woman who had very much survived his teenage outburst, and who was willing to welcome him into her home with open arms.

Before long, Josiah was rebranding himself entirely and rebuilding his neighborhood in every way he possibly could. This included joining forces with James Rhodes’ Crew to help take down a local gang lord. As Josiah X, later Josiah al hajj Saddiq, he proved himself to be just as capable of a super soldier as his father ever was, all while also proving that he was willing to walk as peaceful of a path as the more malicious forces of the world would let him. As of Sam Wilson: Captain America #2, Josiah has picked up the new Shadow Soldier moniker, as well as a new look and shield to go with it.
