Andy Samberg had an awkward encounter with one of the Backstreet Boys at SNL50 — but he knows it ain’t nothin’ but a mistake.

The Palm Springs star recalled a regrettable incident at Radio City Music Hall during an episode of The Lonely Island and Seth Meyers Podcast. Samberg explained that he bumped into one of the boy band singers shortly before the group performed “I Want It That Way” at SNL50: The Homecoming Concert last month. “Obviously it’s a hit for them, but it was a big thing on Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” he recalled. “It’s a cold open where we have the perps in a lineup singing that song.”

Samberg was preparing to take the stage with his medley of Lonely Island hits, which included “Dick in a Box” and “I Just Had Sex” and featured appearances from Lady Gaga, Bad Bunny, T-Pain, and Eddie Vedder. “I was being ushered around for rehearsal by a woman who was working for the show,” he remembered. “I was like, ‘I really have to go to the bathroom’ — number one, everybody relax — and she was like, ‘You need to be on stage now! You need to be on stage now!’ And I was like, ‘Okay!'”

The comedian said that he was hastily escorted to the restroom. “One of the Backstreet Boys was about to go into the bathroom, and she was like, ‘He needs to go! We need him on stage!'” he remembered. “And he was super nice, and he said hello, and he was like, ‘Oh, we’re doing your song!’ ’cause he knew the thing about Brooklyn Nine-Nine, and I was like, ‘Oh, that’s so awesome.'”

Samberg’s accelerated bathroom break turned out to be unnecessary. “I went to the bathroom, quickly left, went out on stage, and then stood there for 45 minutes,” he recalled. “And Backstreet Boys went on and rehearsed before us. And I was like, ‘Aw, man, he must think I’m a piece of s—.’ So anyways, I apologize for that.”

The comedian later clarified that the Backstreet Boy in question was Kevin Richardson.

Samberg’s podcast cohost Seth Meyers said that he received a lot of messages about the Backstreet Boys’ performance — because he and his wife were shown on screen during the concert’s Peacock broadcast. “The text I got sent the most: I had my arms around Alexi, and we were swaying to Backstreet Boys, and they cut to us,” he said. “And I could even sense the camera, and I had a real moment like, ‘Oh shoot. This is gonna be when I’m on.'”

Meyers also said that the boyband stood out among the legendary lineup of performers at the concert, which also included Cher, Lauryn Hill and Wyclef Jean, David Byrne, and Nirvana featuring Post Malone. “The Backstreet Boys, of everyone who performed — on a night where the performances were, without exception, wonderful — they seemed to be the most joyous to me.”
