The annual Lights at the Lake event at Bear Creek Lake State Park saw record-breaking attendance and donations in 2024, with 1,669 vehicles entering and 1,320 toys donated.
The event, held over two weekends in December, has grown in popularity, attracting larger crowds each year.
“Donations and attendance doubled from the previous year, and we are so grateful for everyone that came out to see our spectacular light display while giving back to the community,” said Joey Dayton, Bear Creek Lake State Park manager.
Organized by the Friends of Bear Creek Lake State Park, a volunteer group supporting park programs and upkeep, the event provides crucial funding for both the park and local charitable initiatives.
Revenue from the event benefits the park’s maintenance and the Cumberland Christmas Mother program, which provides assistance to families in need during the holiday season.
“We raised $7,876 in 2023, but last year we raised $14,286 in donations for the Cumberland Christmas Mother,” Dayton said in a press release.
“Bear Creek Hall had a table set up where guests could purchase park merchandise or snacks, and our Friends Group sold pork butts. We are very excited to watch this event grow and continue to support our community,” Dayton added.
The light display, which requires significant preparation, is assembled by both staff and volunteers starting in October. The park is seeking additional camp hosts to assist with future events and displays.
This growth in attendance and fundraising underscores the importance of strategic event planning for parks and campgrounds looking to boost seasonal revenue. For campground operators and park managers, events like Lights at the Lake demonstrate how attractions can increase visibility, attract repeat visitors, and generate critical support from the local community.
