Drew Barrymore appeared mortified after Benny Blanco interrupted her conversation with his fiancée Selena Gomez to inform the talk show host that her senior dog Douglas’ breath smelled “like fish and poo poo.” 

The music producer, 37, and Only Murders in the Building star, 32, visited The Drew Barrymore Show on Thursday to discuss their new album, I Said I Love You First, and Gomez’s makeup brand, Rare Beauty. During their chat, Barrymore’s dog Douglas, who frequently walks around on set during the show, hopped up on the couch and began curiously sniffing Blanco’s mouth.

“Oh, wow, your dog smells so bad,” Blanco confessed to Barrymore, causing Gomez to bust out laughing so hard that she rocketed back into her seat on the couch.

Barrymore, 50, immediately absorbed Blanco’s comment and took it in stride. “By the way, Benny, thank you! You’re the first person that said it, because everyone who comes here…” she began, before he quietly remarked, “Oh my God. Oh my God, it’s crazy.” 

The host fully agreed. “No, I know!” she said, shaking his arm and throwing her head back. “Benny, you’re so honest, thank you! It’s like fish died!“

Blanco, who repeatedly put his hand over his nose afterward, knew exactly what it smelled like. “It’s like poop!” he said as Barrymore burst out laughing. “Like fish and poo poo. Oh my God, that’s crazy.” 

Gomez then stepped in to tell sweet smelly Douglas, who had sat down between Barrymore and Blanco, that they fully accepted him and his mouth odor, petting him and adding, “We still love you.”

Blanco’s confession was, ironically, the breath of fresh air that Barrymore needed. “Benny, you’re the first person, I feel like there’s always a…” she started just as Blanco, scrunching up his face in disgust, interrupted, “That’s insane.” 

Barrymore, in response, simply put her head in her hands, seemingly mortified by the unexpected direction that their conversation had suddenly taken. “No, we love it,” Blanco explained to the audience as he attempted to rectify the situation. “It’s good, guys!” 

Barrymore then turned to Gomez, who had tried to compose herself by putting a hand over her mouth, and added, “You have an honest man.”

When asked by Barrymore if Blanco is that honest in their relationship, Gomez replied, “Absolutely. He’s just really good at gently being able to say, ‘Hey, that didn’t make me feel good,’ or, ‘that wasn’t what I thought was nice,’ and I like that.” 

Douglas is just one of Barrymore’s pets who have appeared on her talk show over the years. Her bearded dragon, Jeremy, was once serenaded by John Legend when the “All of Me” singer visited the show in 2023.
