The Book of Clarence Is a Unique Comedy-Drama

Still of LaKeith Stanfield as Clarence sits down with his arms on his knees in The Book of Clarence.
Image via TriStar Pictures

Director Jeymes Samuel’s The Book of Clarence is one of the most unique takes on the “dramedy” subgenre. The movie follows the titular character (played by LaKeith Stanfield) in 33 A.D. as he struggles financially after losing a chariot race. To pay off his debt to a loan shark, he tries to capitalize on Jesus Christ’s rise in prominence – Clarence tries to claim himself as a Messiah.

The Book of Clarence is a bold cocktail of subgenres, including comedy, drama, and even a biblical period piece. While the movie could have delved deeper into its socially conscious themes, The Book of Clarence was well-received for its eccentric premise and comedic spin on the biblical subgenre. Though the film has faded from the subculture since its release, The Book of Clarence could always see a resurgence on its new streaming home.

Rebel Ridge Is a Surprise Action-Thriller Hit For Netflix

Aaron Pierre as Terry taks a rest in a scene from Rebel Ridge.

Rebel Ridge is a new action-thriller from Netflix starring Aaron Pierre, who was recently cast in the DCU’s new Green Lantern series as John Stewart. Carry-On Puts Taron Egerton In a Die-Hard Scenario

Ethan, played by Taron Egerton, in a TSA uniform looking away from a monitor in the movie Carry-On
Image via Netflix

Carry-On is a new action-thriller film starring Taron Egerton as Ethan Kopeck, a typical TSA worker. Kopeck finds himself embroiled in a criminal conspiracy to smuggle a dangerous package aboard a departing flight. When a mysterious criminal, played by Jason Bateman, blackmails him to join in his scheme, it is up to Kopeck to stop the villain’s plans before it’s too late.

Carry-On is the typical Die Hard-scenario movie, sporting many of the classic action tropes that have come to be associated with the genre. However, the film is distinguishable for its memorable performances, especially from Egerton, who continues his winning streak as a lovable action hero, and Bateman, who plays against type as a conniving villain. Anyone who enjoys the original Die Hard film will likely enjoy this fun and inoffensive entry to the genre the 1988 classic spawned.

Ferrari Depicts the Challenges Faced By the Famed Auto Manufacturer

Adam Driver as Enzo Ferrari in Michael Mann's Ferrari

Adam Driver is one of the most compelling actors today, and he shines in director Michael Mann’s sports biopic Ferrari. The movie portrays Italian car manufacturer Enzo Ferrari’s professional struggles during the preparation for the 1957 Mille Miglia, a motorsport competition. The period piece was somewhat controversial at its release but was nonetheless a topic of interest for car enthusiasts.

Complemented by strong portrayals by Penélope Cruz as Ferrari’s estranged wife Laura and Shailene Woodley as his mistress Lina Lardi, Ferrari is an engrossing character-driven drama. Adam Driver’s performance is expectedly memorable, showing the actor’s impressive range and how he can disappear into a role. The film opened the door for Driver to begin appearing in more serious films moving forward, working with acclaimed directors like Francis Ford Coppola in his later projects.

The Unbearable Weight Of Massive Talent Is A Hilarious Action Comedy

Nicolas Cage and Javi plot their escape in The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent.
Image via Lionsgate

Nicolas Cage is one of the most passionate actors today, maintaining his presence through various smaller-scale movies. Among his most recent, The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent is the most entertaining and memorable. Directed by Tom Gormican, Nick Cage plays himself as he struggles to get roles and accepts a $1 million offer to fly to a birthday party of a dangerous fan of his.

The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent is a clever and meta premise for the actor, and it succeeds in its style of goofy comedy and over-the-top action set pieces. The biggest highlight of the movie, though, is the wildly fun dynamic between Cage and his superfan Javi Gutierrez, played by Pedro Pascal. The film proved to be a surprise hit, giving Nic Cage fans one of the actor’s best films in years.

Cinderella Was Among the Better Disney Live-Action Remakes

Lily James and Richard Madden as Cinderella and Prince Kit in the 2015 remake.
Image via Disney Studios

Directed by Kenneth Branagh, Walt Disney Pictures adapted the classic folk story and remade Disney’s original animated movie with 2015’s Cinderella. This version stars Lily James as the titular character while Cate Blanchett plays the evil stepmother who’s out to make Cinderella’s new home life grueling. Just like the original film, the evil stepmother is assisted by Cinderella’s two stepsisters.

Disney remakes have garnered a reputation for feeling cynical and losing sight of what made the animated versions so beloved. However, Branagh’s Cinderella feels earnest in its take on the story. It balances tradition with modernity, while its visual style, musical score, and performances further help justify this remake’s existence.

The Mask Is a Zany Crowd Pleaser

Jim Carrey as the Mask with many guns with Bang flags in the barrels from the Mask Movie
Image via New Line Cinema

One of Jim Carrey’s most memorable roles, The Mask is about lifting inhibitions. Perhaps that’s why so many people still find the film compelling if not even relatable. Then again, they might love erratic energy. Either way, it’s no wonder there are some initial talks about The Mask sequel, even though it’s been 30 years.

The concept of being possessed by a mysterious artifact isn’t, on its own, an original one. However, The Mask excels at what it does. Carrey’s Stanley Ipkiss gets to do all the things he always stopped himself from doing because he was being so good all the time. Now he is fashionable, he’s charming, and he’s absolutely chaotic. While a sequel will require some modernizing, especially with the franchise’s female roles, new technological developments can only turn the frantic atmosphere up even more. Until then, fans will certainly be happy to know they can stream the popular film.

Scream VI Continues the Famed Horror Franchise

Melissa Barrera as Sam Carpenter hides from Ghostface in Scream VI
Image via Paramount

Scream VI takes place one year after the events of the previous film and follows the survivors of the Woodsboro legacy killings in New York City. When a new killer takes on the persona of Ghostface, it is up to the survivors to end his reign of terror. Set after the events of Scream (2022), the sixth film continues the upward trend of the hit slasher franchise.

The film was the first in the series to not feature Neve Campbell’s Sidney Prescott, as Campbell left after a pay dispute. It does feature the return of Hayden Panettiere from Scream IV and franchise staple Courtney Cox as Gale Weathers. Scream VI is a welcome celebration of its “B-movie” horror roots. Blending nostalgia with modern updates through its plot and cast, this recent installment embraces the days of the 2000s slasher-horror subgenre to great effect. A sequel is currently in development to continue the franchise.

The drama remains one of the actor’s most underrated movies and can be streamed now on Apple TV+.

Argylle Is a Breezy Spy Comedy

Henry Cavill, Dua Lipa, and John Cena sitting at a table in Argylle
Image via Apple TV +

Matthew Vaughn is known for directing over-the-top movies, with Argylle taking a spin on the spy genre. Bryce Dallas Howard stars as reclusive spy novelist Elly Conway as she gets entangled in a worldwide espionage organization mirroring the events of her books. The film includes a star-studded cast that features Bryce Dallas Howard, Sam Rockwell, Henry Cavill, Dua Lipa, Brian Cranston, Catherine O’Hara, John Cena, Ariana DeBose, Samuel L. Jackson, and more.

Argyle isn’t a groundbreaking new take on action comedies or the spy-thriller genre, but its high-octane energy and colorful cast of characters make this an entertaining and breezy watch. Its quirky premise, charming ensemble cast, and the “parody” approach to the genre help carry the movie. Moreover, the film’s third act reveals that there could be an exciting future for the Argylle franchise should it continue.

Napoleon Reunites Joaquin Phoenix and Ridley Scott

napoleon bonaparte (Joaquin Phoenix) with his wife josephine (Vanessa Kirby) in Napoleon.
Image via Apple TV +

Napoleon stars Joaquin Phoenix as the titular character Napoleon Bonaparte, the French emperor and military commander. The film follows his rise to power and his complicated, volatile relationship with his wife, Josephine Bonaparte, played by Vanessa Kirby. The movie follows Napoleon through the end of the French Revolution until he dies in exile.

Napoleon reunited Phoenix with Gladiator director Ridley Scott, and the film received praise for its performances and fantastic battle sequences. However, many critics and historians noted several historical inaccuracies in the film, which hurt its overall reception. Still, it features another commanding performance from Joaquin Phoenix that audiences can appreciate. It had one of the highest budgets for an AppleTV+ film at a whopping $200 million and only grossed $221 million at the box office before dropping on the streaming service.

Wolfs Is a Fun Buddy Comedy That Should Have Been Released in Theaters

Wolfs - Brad Pitt and George Clooney interrogate a suspect
Image via Apple Tv+

Wolfs starred George Clooney and Brad Pitt as two fixers hired to cover up the same crime. The two professionals clash over their different methods, annoyed to be dealing with the other in the middle of a job. Things take an additional twist, however, when they discover that the young man they’ve been hired to dispose of isn’t dead.

Wolfs was originally intended for a theatrical release before being relegated to a streaming exclusive on Apple TV+. Nevertheless, the film might have generated a respectable crowd had it been released in theaters. Clooney and Pitt have terrific chemistry as rival fixers and director Jon Watts (known for his work on the MCU Spider-Man trilogy) presents keen storytelling capabilities. It was a strong combination that could have helped make Wolfs a surprise hit had it landed in theaters rather than on Apple’s streaming service.

Dune: Part Two Brings the First Book’s Adaptation to a Thrilling Close

Timothée Chalamet as Paul Atreides looking out over his expanding imperium after gaining control in the events of Dune.
Image via Warner Bros

With Frank Herbert’s Dune series having such a rocky history in the theatrical space, it was gratifying to see director Denis Villeneuve’s 2021 movie succeed. The director and principal cast return for Dune: Part Two, finishing the adaptation of the first book. In the film, fans see Paul Atreides (played by Timothée Chalamet) join forces with the Fremen people of Arrakis to mount a counter-attack on the Harkonnens for the slaughter of his family and house.

Dune: Part Two adapts the most explosive plot points of Herbert’s first novel, backed by even more jaw-dropping visuals and a masterful ensemble performance by the main cast. Though it’s still relatively early in the decade, this gripping saga of political turmoil, betrayal, and ominous prophecies is already making a case for being the best sci-fi movie of the 2020s. It is no surprise that Dune: Part Two is nominated for an Academy Award in multiple categories, including Best Picture.

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone Was the Start of a Pop Culture Icon

Daniel Radcliffe as Harry Potter, getting his wand for the first time in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone.

Author J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter franchise exploded in popularity with the film series, and the adaptation of Sorcerer’s Stone was a strong start. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone stars Daniel Radcliffe as the titular wizard boy. Harry gets to leave his abusive aunt and uncle’s house and ride a train into his first year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

He meets and befriends the charming Hermione Granger (played by Emma Watson) and Ron Weasley (played by Rupert Grint), aka, “The Golden Trio” along the way as a far more dramatic plot unfolds. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone was praised for its endearing main cast and imaginative take on this fantasy world. It was also well-received for streamlining the novel into a concise theatrical runtime without sacrificing the impact of the core story.

The two titular Titans must team up to tackle this threat before it destroys the world as they know it.

The New Empire may not be as tightly told as the original Godzilla vs. Kong, but it promises an exciting future for the Monsterverse, including more team-ups between its feature creatures and even more kaiju in films to come. The film’s widespread success has led to a third Godzilla x Kong film getting greenlit, with a release date in 2027.

Joker: Folie à Deux Must Be Seen to Be Believed

Image via Warner Bros. Pictures

One of the most infamous movies of 2024, Joker: Folie à Deux is finally available to stream on Max. The sequel to 2019’s smash success, Joker, follows Arthur Fleck as he prepares for his imminent trial, where he may be given the death penalty. In the lead-up to the trial, Arthur meets another patient in Arkham, Lady Gaga’s Harley “Lee” Quinn. Together, the two engage in a shared musical delusion that determines the fate of Arthur Fleck and the Joker.

DC fans and cinephiles have both universally condemned Todd Phillips’s sequel to Joker, labeling it one of the worst comic book movies ever and a far inferior film to its predecessor. Nevertheless, the bizarre musical sequences and strange character choices make Folie à Deux a can’t-miss event now that it is streaming complementary on Max. Even the most skeptical viewer must watch Folie à Deux at least once, just to see its shocking creative choices with their own eyes.

Asteroid City Is Wes Anderson’s Latest With A Wacky Style

Augie, Stanley, and Woodrow walking in front of junk cars in Asteroid City.
Image via Universal Pictures

Asteroid City is the latest film from the mind of Wes Anderson. The film takes place in a retro-futuristic 1955 and follows an astronomy convention that is happening in the small town of Asteroid City. It features an ensemble cast that includes Jason Schwartzman, Scarlett Johansson, Tom Hanks, Edward Norton, Jeffrey Wright, and Tilda Swinton. The film had a relatively muted run in theaters, only grossing $53 million worldwide, and hopes to find a bigger audience on streaming.

Anyone who has seen a Wes Anderson movie knows they’re in for a wacky film thanks to his signature style. Asteroid City will certainly gel with established fans of the auteur director the most, but that’s not necessarily a negative in this case. The movie’s recognizable visual style and small-scale human stories are worth the investment. It competed for the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival but was shut out at the Academy Awards, not earning a single nomination.

Violent Night Is Good Before and After Christmas Too

David Harbour stars as Santa in Violent Night
Image via Universal Pictures

David Harbour’s Santa Claus is a revelation and quite different from the average Christmas movie. More of an action flick, Violent Night depicts a unique scenario — the Lightstone family is attacked by a group of mercenaries in the dead of night. What they don’t realize is that Santa Claus is on the premises, and he’s ready to fight.

Wildly entertaining and full of twists, Violent Night offers plenty of thrills for viewers, especially those who love action. Bloody and chilling, it also has some magic, which makes it a modern holiday classic, albeit an R-rated one. David Harbour shines as a violent Santa Claus, making it all the more exciting that Violent Night 2 is currently in development.

Suzanne Collins’s The Hunger Games is one of the most critically and commercially successful young-adult book franchises, with The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes adapting her prequel story. Francis Lawrence’s movie is set 64 years before the original film, following Coriolanus Snow’s (played by Tom Blyth) origins that lead him to become Panem’s tyrant leader.

Jurassic World: Dominion Reunites the New Cast With the Original

The final installment in the Jurassic World trilogy, Jurassic World: Dominion is set four years after the previous entry which finds dinosaurs now living alongside humans in the world. Owen Grady and Claire Dearing set out to find the young Maisie after she goes missing. Meanwhile, Ellie Sattler, Alan Grant, and Ian Malcolm work to expose a conspiracy surrounding Biosyn, a genomics corporation.

The film concludes the storylines that began with Jurassic Park and Jurassic World. It reunites franchise stars Sam Neill, Laura Dern, and Jeff Goldblum, who had not appeared on-screen together since Jurassic Park. The mix of the old and new cast was, admittedly, the movie’s one major highlight, as it received mediocre reviews and the next entry in the franchise will take the story in a new direction. Still, those simply looking for dinosaur-themed action and a dose of nostalgia can enjoy Dominion, at least casually.
