This article contains major spoilers for Daredevil: Born Again Season 1, Episode 1, “Heaven’s Half Hour”.
Daredevil: Born Again‘s premiere pleased fans of the Netflix series by reuniting Matt Murdock, Karen Page, and Foggy Nelson in the opening scenes. Episode 1 also confirmed Foggy’s story arc would be tragic and heartbreaking.
It’s been a wild ride for Deborah Ann Woll leading up to Daredevil: Born Again‘s premiere. Woll feared for Karen Page’s arc after the Netflix original was canceled, even more so during the reboot show’s development. In a push to build a brand-new storyline for Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox), Page was sidelined in the early scripts along with Franklin “Foggy” Nelson (Elden Henson). Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Woll said it was a difficult, uncertain time in her career.

Daredevil Could Be the Answer to a Problem that has Plagued the MCU Since Iron Man
Daredevil: Born Again features a major shakeup that could help the Marvel Cinematic Universe with a problem it’s been having since Iron Man.
“We think of careers as being a ladder,” Woll said. “You keep stepping up and up, but acting isn’t like that. Most art forms are not. There are peaks and valleys. You have a peak doing a show like Daredevil, and then inevitably you’re probably going to have a valley, and that’s a tricky time. It’s hard to feel good about yourself or good about your work.”
“My valley coincided with a pandemic, so that really made some of that harder,” the actor continued. Woll found her footing within the tabletop community, as a writer and host of Dungeons & Dragons campaigns. She recently shared this passion with Jon Bernthal, who also reprises Frank Castle in Born Again.
‘Being Asked Back Was Icing On The Cake’
“I’ve been through a roller coaster of feelings about it,” Woll added. Woll and Henson’s characters were rewritten into the script after a creative overhaul. The Netflix series will now be incorporated into Born Again‘s storyline. Fans were stoked by behind-the-scenes images of Page, Henson, and Cox, which turned out to be the premiere episode’s opening shot.
“It’s so rare for something to come back in a significant way after so many years,” Woll asserted. “So being asked back after the fact was just icing on the cake.” Their reunion proved ill-fated, however; Born Again showed fans it has no problems killing off fan-favorite, key characters.

Daredevil: Born Again brings back not just Matt Murdock but his friends Karen Page and Foggy Nelson, but what happens to the characters in the show?
“There has to be loss in stories,” Woll said, referring to Foggy Nelson’s death in Episode 1. “That’s a deep part of how you tell things. For actors, we lose on two levels. We lose the character that we love watching, and we don’t get to work with that actor again necessarily.”
Woll promised the show didn’t kill off Foggy fust for shock value. The surviving characters will deal with the weight of that loss. “This isn’t going to be a moment that is easily cast off for the sake of a plot point,” she said. “This is something that these characters are going to grapple with heavily for a long time, especially for me. He dies in my arms.”
