Daredevil: Born Again star Ayelet Zurer has finally shared her thoughts regarding the Disney+ revival’s initial recasting of Vanessa Fisk. Prior to the creative overhaul, House of Cards star Sandrine Holt was originally enlisted to portray a new iteration of the character.

During a recent interview with TVLine, Zurer opened up about Vanessa Fisk’s initial recasting in Daredevil: Born Again. She admitted that she was definitely confused by the original creative team’s decision, which was made two years ago, right after the revival’s official announcement. “I never really quite understood why they made that decision to not keep not just me but more almost all the actors but Vincent and Charlie,” she said. “But I can say that when they did change the creative and decided to go back to the original cast, I was very, very happy to join. Because I really like that character, and I thought there was so much more to explore with her.”

Before reprising the role in Daredevil: Born Again, Zurer played Vanessa Fisk in all three seasons of the original Netflix series, where she was introduced as an art dealer who becomes Kingpin’s love interest. Zurer also discussed her long-awaited reunion with lead star Vincent D’Onofrio, who immediately called her after her return was finalized. “I love working with Vincent, and I was so thrilled to go back to it. I love the way he makes his character work. I love him as an actor, as a friend,” she recalled. “He was one of the first people who called me when this was revealed; I think he was also very happy that it happened. It just feels right, you know?”

In addition, Zurer also expressed her excitement for her character’s new storyline in Daredevil: Born Again. Compared to her role in the original Netflix show, the revival gave her character more depth and autonomy by making her a crime lord. “I was very excited, but I was at first taken aback by the shift that had happened within Vanessa… and also some other things in the show that will be revealed later,” Zurer shared. “I was like, ‘How is that going to work?’ But once we dove in, I found Vanessa to be a way deeper character, because she is dealing with some new aspects of their relationship — trust, and honesty — that made it very interesting for me to find ways to perform it.”
