The following contains spoilers for the first two episodes of Daredevil: Born Again, now streaming on Disney+.
Fans were left stunned by the opening scenes of Daredevil Born: Again’s Season 1 premiere. This action sequence results in the death of Foggy Nelson in front of Josie’s Bar after Bullseye shoots him.
What makes Foggy’s death even more heartbreaking is that Charlie Cox’s Matt Murdock couldn’t help. Bullseye diverted him to another scene, opening the gap for the murders. But while fans understandably got caught up with Foggy’s death, they missed the most glaring plot hole from this sequence

Daredevil: Born Again showrunner Dario Scardapane confirms what fans had expected all along about the premiere’s shocking death.
Deborah Ann Woll’s Karen Page is in front of the bar with Foggy. Yet, as Bullseye aims and takes others out, he somehow doesn’t hit Karen. At this juncture, it’s safe to assume he wants to spare her. But when he approaches from the shadows, he tries to shoot her. This is a massive plot hole, given he doesn’t miss. He even calls out to her to let her know he wants her dead.
Born Again gives Karen time to go through her purse and find her gun. But this dramatic pause from Bullseye allows Matt to intervene. As the Man Without Fear and Bullseye fight, the villain is able to fling knives, among other things. Some blades kill other innocents as part of the mass casualties. One has to wonder how Bullseye couldn’t add Karen to the mix.
Bullseye had her dead to rights, so he should have been able to kill her, given his nature when going after targets. Instead, he kills people around Karen but can’t seem to hit her from close quarters. At this point, Bullseye isn’t as effective as he intends if he wants to truly deal Matt a blow. Killing Karen and Foggy would be devastating for Matt.

A controversial moment in the premiere of Daredevil: Born Again was done for good reason, according to the show’s team.
Ironically, Karen remaining alive makes for a more nuanced dramatic story. Firstly, she is already at odds with Matt in Born Again Episode 1 after leaving for San Francisco in the wake of the tragedy. Matt pulled away when Foggy died and Karen needed him as a friend. She can’t forgive Matt for that. Seeing as Matt embraced his dark side and seemingly killed two cops to protect a witness, the show sets Karen up to return and address Matt reverting to his rage. Born Again Episode 2 has that vibe of when Daredevil wanted to kill Kingpin and Bullseye in the Netflix era.
This could bring up a discussion about whether Karen will endorse Matt coming out of retirement as a vigilante. She also lost her mentor, Ben Urich, to Kingpin, so Karen has had a lot to process over the years. Outside the grief and trauma, if Karen is still in love with Matt, there will be a love triangle between her, him and his new partner, Heather. Karen could end up feeling more abandoned than ever.

These events could set Karen up to reunite with Frank Castle aka the Punisher. They can figure out if they’re just friends, or something more. She will also have a chance to discern if she wants to embrace more violent methods of dealing with villains since Bullseye is still alive. Frank can represent that duality and leave Karen conflicted: does she want more Punishers, or should people play it by the book and hope justice gets served?
Ultimately, Karen is such a multidimensional character with ties to everyone. Wilson Fisk (the New York mayor) hates her, too, so she has just as many problems to resolve compared to Foggy, who was more about business. In the end, the creative idea of keeping Karen alive has a lot of potential. It just needed more careful thought and execution to not make Bullseye look like an amateur.
