Cary Elwes has joined the cast of new Peacock thriller series M.I.A. Elwes will be appearing in the upcoming show alongside stars from Narcos and Fear the Walking Dead as series regulars.

According to Deadline, Ozark co-creator Bill Dubuque’s series has added Maurice Compte (Narcos and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood) and Danay Garcia (Fear of the Walking Dead and Prison Break), along with Saw star Elwes, to its expanding cast. The streamer has yet to reveal the character names of its three newest cast members.

Cary Elwes’ The Princess Bride Injury Made It Into the Final Cut

Sometimes actors get hurt during productions, but Cary Elwes’ injury actually made it into the final cut of The Princess Bride.

Previously, Peacock cast Shannon Gisela (Her Study of a Killer) and Brittany Adebumola (The Other Black Girl) in leading roles as Etta Tiger Jonz and Lovely, respectively, while Dylan Jackson will be playing Stanley.

M.I.A. – which stands for the airport code for Miami International Airport – revolves around Etta Tiger Jonz’s drug-running family, who have controlled Miami’s most dangerous industry throughout her life. Etta faces the unnerving responsibility of saving her family business when rivals threaten their territory.

Dubuque is expected to write the pilot episode, and will then executive produce M.I.A. alongside its showrunner Karen Campbell. Dubuque co-created Netflix’s Emmy Award-winning crime drama Ozark with Mark Williams, in which the duo explored one married couple’s deadly decision to launder money for a Mexican drug cartel.

Dubuque is well-versed in the crime genre, having penned the screenplays for Ben Affleck’s 2016 action thriller The Accountant and its 2025 sequel. He also co-wrote Robert Downey Jr’s 2014 legal drama The Judge and wrote 2016’s A Family Man, starring Gerard Butler and Willem Dafoe.

M.I.A. showrunner Karen Campbell got her start as a co-producer on Covert Affairs and serving as a story editor on Dexter. More recently, Campbell was a co-executive producer on hit fantasy drama Outlander and executive producer on Ridley Scott’s dystopian series Raised by Wolves.

Elwes is perhaps best known for playing the dashing romantic lead Westley (aka the Dread Pirate Roberts) in 1987’s classic comedy The Princess Bride, as well as twisted physician Lawrence Gordon in two Saw movies.

Cary Elwes Made His Screen Debut in 1979

The Actor’s First Credited Role Was Playing a Disco Dancer in Ian McShane and Suzanne Somers’ Sports Drama Yesterday’s Hero

  • Elwes followed his early success in The Princess Bride with standout performances in 1989 war drama Glory and 1990’s racing drama Days of Thunder, opposite Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman.
  • Other notable 1990s roles for the Hollywood legend include playing a very unlucky magazine reporter in 1993’s The Crush, co-starring Alicia Silverstone, plus 1996 disaster epic Twister and Jim Carrey’s 1997 comedy Liar Liar.
  • Elwes earned a Screen Actors Guild Award nomination in 2020 for portraying Mayor Larry Kline in Netflix’s Stranger Things.

In 2023, Elwes seemingly dismissed the possibility of reprising his role as Lawrence Gordon in a future Saw movie.

“I have no comment one way or the other about that franchise, I really can’t speak to it,” he told Screen Rant. “I’m happy for the filmmakers that they continue to make money, and that it seems to be a financial bonus for them, I really can’t speak to it, because I’m not really involved anymore.”

That same year, he confirmed to Empire Magazine that he’s recognized most often for two very different, yet equally iconic, roles from his near-50 year career.

“I’m happy for the filmmakers that they continue to make money, and that it seems to be a financial bonus for them. I really can’t speak to it, because I’m not really involved anymore”

“I would say it’s a combination of my characters in Saw and Robin Hood: Men in Tights,” he confirmed. “It’s very rare that I find someone who is a fan of both.”

Elwes played the suave bandit Robin Hood in 1993’s Mel Brooks-directed spoof, alongside comedian Richard Lewis as Prince John and Dave Chappelle as Ahchoo. Robin Hood: Men in Tights divided critics at the time of its release, but was a significant financial success by making more than $7o million at the box office.

More recently, Elwes appeared opposite Tom Cruise in 2023’s Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, as Director of National Intelligence (DNI) Denlinger, in addition to portraying The King in director Zack Snyder’s Netflix science fiction epic Rebel Moon and its sequel Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver.
