Cate Blanchett only has one photograph from her and husband Andrew Upton’s wedding day and, honestly, she’s completely fine with it.

The Lord of the Rings alum, 55, revealed on Friday’s episode of The Drew Barrymore Show that she enlisted two friends to help document her and Upton’s nuptials back in 1997, only for both of them to drop the ball because they were having too much fun celebrating.

“When we got married we had absolutely no money,” Blanchett explained to host Drew Barrymore. “We couldn’t have a photographer and we had two friends who were photographers — one guy who got so drunk he forgot to load film in the camera, and the other one had such a good time that he didn’t take any pictures, and as a result, we have one picture of our wedding. That’s all we have is a blurry picture of the two of us getting in the car.”

Still, the two-time Oscar winner said that the lack of photographic evidence has made the ceremony feel even more special over the years.

“I was so sad and so upset and I wept at the time that we didn’t have any pictures,” she confessed. “But, in the end, I’m kind of quite pleased that I don’t have any pictures because I then constantly try and recall the evening.”

Blanchett’s wedding day revelation was part of a larger conversation that she and Barrymore were having about their experiences growing up in a more “creative, free time” without the constant need to document every single moment.

“You remember it more if you don’t try and record it,” Blanchett explained. “You see people on holiday and they’re constantly recording the thing… You’ll never look at it, and no one else will ever be able to see what you’re seeing. You then forget the moment, and I know that myself… it’s a dislocating thing rather than a connecting thing.”

Blanchett first met her husband, an Australian playwright and screenwriter, while acting in a production of Anton Chekhov’s The Seagull. Although, as she told Vanity Fair, the pair didn’t have the greatest first impressions of each other.

“He thought I was aloof and I thought he was arrogant,” she said at the time. “And it just shows how wrong you can be. But once he kissed me, that was that.”

They later tied the knot in 1997 and, in the years since, have welcomed three sons — Dashiell, Roman, and Ignatius — and one daughter, Edith.

The Drew Barrymore Show airs weekdays on CBS. See Blanchett talk about her wedding in the video above.
