Summary

  • Ragdoll lost her Search Quirk to All For One, leaving her vulnerable and changed forever.
  • Hawks had his powerful wing Quirk stripped away by All For One, rendering him defenseless.
  • Star and Stripe’s Quirk was stolen by All For One, causing him internal damage and leading to his downfall.

In the world of My Hero Academia, having a Quirk is required in order to become a hero. While it’s established at the beginning of the series that a good portion of the population is born with Quirks, over the course of the story, technology, and abilities are introduced that hold the power to actually steal or remove a person’s Quirk entirely, putting them out of action permanently as they are forced to watch the other heroes from the sidelines.

Losing a Quirk can take a huge toll on a hero both mentally and physically, and if it happens in the middle of a battle, it also leaves them extremely vulnerable and largely defenseless. Needless to say, having a Quirk be suddenly removed in My Hero Academia is a fate worse than death for some people, so now that the series is over, at least in the manga, it’s time to reflect on the characters who ended up losing their powers, and why exactly they were forced to separate from their Quirks in the first place. Before jumping in, this list will contain major spoilers for the entirety of the My Hero Academia story.

Ragdoll

Ragdoll Had Her Quirk Snatched Away By The Malicious All For One

Ragdoll is a member of the Wild, Wild Pussycats, a group of heroes who all possess their own strong Quirks which they use to fend off villains and to help train the students. However, Ragdoll was quickly removed from the group after her Search Quirk, which allowed her to identify every last detail about a person after scanning them with her own eyes, was taken from her by All For One during the Forest Training Camp arc.

By this point in the story, All For One had barely even shown his face, so this sudden reveal acted as an eerie bit of foreshadowing for what was to come from the dangerous villain. Ragdoll ends up becoming a shell of her former self after the incident, though she does regain some confidence by the end after watching her friends and fellow pussycats continue to push on against the villains.

Hawks

Hawks Got A Little Too Close For Comfort With All For One

Hawks may be considered a hero who is somewhat morally gray for much of the story, but during the final war, he becomes an invaluable asset who is more than willing to put his body on the line to take down All For One. Hawks’ Quirk is pretty simple; it allows him to use, and manipulate, wings and feathers in any way that he wants, which is a Quirk so powerful it skyrocketed him to the number 2 Pro-Hero position at the young age of 20.

My Hero Academia: 8 Anime You’ve Heard All Might’s Voice In

There’s no doubt that longtime anime enthusiasts have recognized Kenta Miyake’s voice in other shows besides My Hero Academia.

Hawks’ wings had already suffered severe damage after they were burned by Dabi before the war even officially kicked off, but just as they were starting to grow back, Hawks’ Quirk was suddenly taken from him by All For One. During this confrontation, All For One even decided to mock Hawks by telling him how much he hated his Quirk and how useless it is, all while seeping it out from Hawks’ near-lifeless body.

Overhaul

Shigaraki Made Sure That Overhaul Could Never Get In The League’s Way Ever Again By Destroying His Hands

  • Loses Ability To Use Quirk After His Arms Are Removed

Overhaul, whose real name is Shie Hassaikai, assumed the role of main antagonist for a single arc in the story, but it’s fair to say he certainly made a name for himself despite only having a limited amount of screen time. As a man who possesses a Quirk that can destroy and reassemble anything he touches, which he uses to abuse a young girl named Eri, Overhaul becomes target number 1 for the heroes.

While he’s eventually taken down by Midoriya, it’s actually Shigaraki who lays the final blow after he destroys both of Overhaul’s arms, so that he can never use his Quirk ever again. While Overhaul doesn’t technically lose his Quirk in the literal sense, he does lose the ability to use it, and therefore might as well not have it at all, considering he’s essentially no different from the everyday civilian once he finally wakes up.

All Might

One For All Is Designed To Be Passed Down, And All Might Decided Midoriya Would Be The One To Carry His Torch

  • Passes Quirk Down To Midoriya

When Midoriya first runs into All Might in the very first episode, it’s clear that the Pro-Hero isn’t exactly in the best shape of his life. Sure, his Quirk, One For All, still allows him to take out villains without breaking a sweat, but the effect it has on his body from all the fighting means he needs to pass it down sooner rather than later, and after witnessing Midoriya’s courage and heroism, he decides the young Quirkless student will be the one to inherit it.

While All Might would still be able to fight in his hero form for a little while longer, his epic duel with All For One finally extinguished the final embers that still resided within him. All Might would struggle to find his place in hero society after removing his Quirk, but he still plays an extremely important role leading up to the war and even manages to get involved himself with the help of some Support Gear.

3

Star And Stripe

America’s Top Hero Had One Final Nasty Surprise For All For One After He Steals Her Quirk

Star and Stripe is a pretty unique character in My Hero Academia. Despite only being in the story for no more than a few chapters and episodes, the number 1 American hero possesses the most broken Quirk in the entire series, New Order, which allows her to change the properties of literally anything she touches. Essentially, the world, and everything in it, is Star and Stripe’s own little playground.

Though she is able to put her Quirk to good use against All For One, who is assuming Shigaraki’s body at the time, she eventually gets a little too close and has her Quirk stolen, before she eventually disintegrates. However, Star’s final rule was that New Order would not play well with other Quirks, meaning when All For One consumes it, he starts taking extreme amounts of damage from the inside due to all his Quirks fighting with one another, acting as one last parting gift from the underutilized Pro-Hero.

2

Mirio

Mirio Was Shot With A Quirk-Destroying Bullet While Serving His Heroic Duty

  • Removed With Quirk Destroying Bullet

Mirio, a bright and plucky student who comes to befriend Midoriya, is introduced to the story shortly before the Overhaul arc. When he first arrives on the scene, Mirio explains it took him many years to master his Quirk, Permeation, which was largely seen to be completely uncontrollable considering how dangerous it is. It therefore came as a massive shock when, not long into the Overhaul raid, Mirio becomes the target of one of the mafia’s Quirk-destroying bullets.

After taking a shot in the back and losing Permeation for good, Mirio continues to fight to protect Eri with a smile on his face, despite it being clear how much distress he is in. Though Mirio does eventually gain his Quirk back a little later on thanks to Eri’s Rewind ability, it was truly heartbreaking to see him lose it so suddenly after he explained how much work he had put in to finally master it.

1

Midoriya

Midoriya Transfers His Immensely Powerful Quirk To Put An End To All For One

  • Used To Destroy All For One

Throughout the course of the story, it becomes clear that the main purpose of the One For All Quirk is to defeat All For One; a Quirk which will only continue to cause pain and suffering as long as it exists. During the final battle between Midoriya and Shigaraki, Midoriya comes to realize the only way to put an end to the chaos is to defeat him from the inside out, that is, forcing One For All into Shigaraki’s body to destroy him and all of his Quirks internally.

After he manages to pass on his Quirk, Midoriya uses the dying embers to keep himself going for a little while longer until, once again, he finds himself Quirkless. Unlike most characters in the series who would be angered or upset though, Midoriya is simply happy that he was able to save Japan, and even the entire world, from being destroyed, and it was all thanks to his selflessness and heroism in that final moment.
