Chet Hanks celebrated his first-ever talk show appearance by paying homage to a famous Tom — and, surprisingly, it wasn’t his dad, Tom Hanks.
The Running Point actor fulfilled a lifelong dream in his appearance on Tuesday’s episode of The Drew Barrymore Show. “This is my first time on a talk show ever, and there’s something that I’ve always wanted to do,” Hanks said. “Can I do it?”
Host Drew Barrymore approved Hanks’ request without knowing her guest’s intentions. “Alright look, I’m gonna do this but I need you guys, it’s only gonna work if you guys cheer really loud, okay?” Hanks implored the studio audience. “You gotta scream, you gotta lose your minds, or else I’m gonna look stupid. Can I count on you?”
After a collective “Yes!” from the audience, Hanks counted to three and jumped on top of the couch, holding his hands above his head before leaping to the floor and pounding the ground with his fist. He then ran over to Barrymore, grabbed both of her hands, and screamed victoriously in her face.
Anyone who’s seen Tom Cruise‘s infamous 2005 appearance on The Oprah Winfrey Show should recognize all of these gestures and poses, as the Jerry Maguire star hit all of the same moves while declaring his love for Katie Holmes during an off-the-walls conversation with Oprah Winfrey.

However, Cruise actually only remained atop the couch for a fraction of a second, whereas Hanks stayed there for several moments, and the Mission: Impossible star’s unpredictable moves were broken up with conversational fragments with Winfrey, whereas Hanks hit them all at once.
“Okay, that was good,” Hanks said after returning to his seat. “Did you guys get the reference?”
Barrymore responded, “Oh my God, Tom Cruise. Yes, of course, oh I love it.”

On Running Point, Hanks portrays Travis Bugg, the point guard for the fictional Los Angeles Waves pro basketball team overseen by Isla Gordon (Kate Hudson). The show also stars Drew Tarver, Scott MacArthur, Brenda Song, Toby Sandeman, and Jay Ellis.
Hanks said that he watched the series with his parents, Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson, to gauge their responses to the show. “They liked it a lot,” he said. “We binged it together, which was fun, because they got to — I had already seen it, but I watched it again to see their reaction. It was great.”
