Warning: This post contains spoilers for Cobra Kai season 6.
Cobra Kai‘s final episodes just dropped today, but that doesn’t mean we can’t start campaigning for spinoffs.
Creators Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz, and Hayden Schlossberg have been open about their desire to keep the Miyagi-verse alive on Netflix with potential new shows built around Cobra Kai characters. “We’ve been working on lots of different ideas and waiting for things to be official,” says Schlossberg. Adds Heald, “We’re definitely closer, but we can’t say anything yet.” (Netflix declined to comment.)
In the meantime, the Big 3 graciously agreed to listen to a few spinoff pitches from Entertainment Weekly. Not only did they share their feedback on our ideas, the Cobra Kai creators revealed they’re already plotting at least one of the proposed series.
PITCH NO. 1: ‘Gunther Braun: Bureaucracy Crusher’
Netflix
CONCEPT: Having whipped the bickering All Valley board into shape, former Sekai Taikai chairman Gunther Braun (Carsten Norgaard) travels from town to town, taking over local sports tournaments and making them run like clockwork with his no-nonsense Germanic ways — and maybe a few front kicks.
COBRA KAI CREATOR FEEDBACK: “It’s like Bar Rescue!” says Heald with a laugh. Adds Hurwitz, “I think we’re all in on Gunther. You know how much we love the All Valley board, so to have this very serious man who’s thrown this big, lauded international tournament, be in the mix with the pettiness of the All Valley board was so much fun. It should happen in every town across America.”
PITCH NO. 2: ‘Binary Brothers’
Netflix
CONCEPT: This action-comedy follows Hawk (Jacob Bertrand) and Demetri (Gianni DeCenzo) as they navigate college life at Cal Tech, work on cool robotics projects, and occasionally kick some karate butt. Think Real Genius meets Cobra Kai.
COBRA KAI CREATOR FEEDBACK: “It’s like she stole our computer!” Hurwitz marvels. Heald agrees, saying, “That may or may not be something we’ve already talked about.” Continues Hurwitz, “There may actually be a document, a very thorough document, that says what you just said.”
PITCH NO. 3: ‘Weekend Warriors with Sensei Stingray’
Netflix
CONCEPT: When he’s not picking up dry cleaning for his mother, Sensei Raymond ‘Stingray’ Porter (Paul Walter Hauser) lords over weekend karate classes for beginners at Johnny Lawrence’s Cobra Kai dojo. Wackiness and cute-kid-fueled hijinks ensue.
COBRA KAI CREATOR FEEDBACK: “Listen, we talk to Paul Walter Hauser all the time about the Stingray character and possibilities,” says Schlossberg. “What’s fun is you could pick a character like that and it could have a totally different feel than Cobra Kai. You can lean more like comedy or action-comedy if you went for it.” Adds Hurwitz, “For Stingray, I think we prefer a series of ‘80s-style action movies where he’s just kicking ass and taking names.”
PITCH NO. 4: ‘Hill Valley’
Universal Pictures
CONCEPT: Okay, so this one isn’t our idea. But in Cobra Kai‘s final scene, we see a guy in a suit (played by Hurwitz) pitch another guy in a suit (played by Heald) on a Back to the Future spinoff series set in “an alternate 1985” version of Hill Valley.
COBRA KAI CREATOR FEEDBACK: Though Hurwitz, Heald, and Schlossberg aren’t currently working on anything BTTF related, they’re big fans of the films and have some thoughts on this hypothetical spinoff. “You’re dealing in Biff’s world from Back to the Future 2, that dark casino world that Biff has created,” explains Heald, adding that the Cobra Kai scene is “us kind of poking fun at ourselves. It’s our little meta moment.”
Unfortunately, Bob Gale — who co-wrote the Future films with director Robert Zemeckis — recently revealed that he has no interest in reviving the property for the screen. “We have the utmost respect for the entire team that brought Back to the Future to life,” says Hurwitz. “If they have no interest in that world ever opening up, we’re not going to knock on their door.”
Cobra Kai‘s final season is streaming on Netflix now.
