The Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (COMAC) has unveiled an ambitious new production strategy for its flagship C919 aircraft, raising its 2024 output target from 50 to 75 units. This ambitious adjustment underscores China’s determined push to break into the global aviation industry and challenge the longstanding dominance of Boeing and Airbus.

At a recent supplier meeting in Xi’an (XIY), COMAC presented a comprehensive plan that aims for an annual production of 200 C919 jets by 2029. This expansion is part of China’s broader strategy to establish itself as a formidable competitor to the aerospace giants currently controlling the commercial aircraft market.

Accelerating the C919 Production Timeline

With its newly revised targets, COMAC is set to ramp up production significantly in the coming years. For 2024, the company now aims to produce 75 jets, with plans to escalate to 100 by 2025, and 150 by 2028. The company’s long-term goal of reaching 200 aircraft annually by 2029 reflects its commitment to not only increase its footprint but also position itself as a competitive force in the global aviation landscape.

This increased pace of production is supported by a substantial investment boost. COMAC has raised its procurement budget for the C919 by 70%, bringing this year’s expenditure to approximately 34 billion yuan ($4.7 billion). This enhanced investment highlights the crucial role the C919 plays in China’s strategy for self-reliance in aviation.

The C919’s Growing Role in the Market

The C919, China’s first domestically manufactured narrowbody jet, entered commercial service in May 2023 and has already garnered significant interest. The aircraft has secured hundreds of orders from the country’s top airlines, signaling strong market confidence.

During the 2024 Lunar New Year period, C919 flights saw a 40% increase in utilization compared to the previous year, a clear indication of the aircraft’s rising popularity. As more Chinese carriers adopt the C919, the aircraft is increasingly poised to challenge Boeing’s 737 and Airbus’s A320, both of which have long dominated the single-aisle aircraft market.

Expanding Horizons: COMAC’s Vision for the Future

COMAC is not stopping with the C919. The company is also developing widebody jets, including the C929 and C939, which are set to compete with Boeing’s 787 Dreamliner and 747. These new aircraft will provide a Chinese alternative for long-haul flights, reducing dependence on Western manufacturers and increasing domestic capabilities for international air travel.

Though COMAC has so far focused primarily on securing domestic contracts, the company is also drawing growing interest from international markets. As global airlines begin exploring potential collaborations, COMAC’s progress could open doors for further partnerships and international expansion.
