CommonWealth Coffeehouse’s flagship Broadway location may soon be up for sale, according to Bexar County records that show the midtown cafe is under foreclosure.
According to county records, the CommonWealth Coffeehouse at 118 Davis Court, which is the original location of the local cafe and bakery chain, is in default.
On Jan. 13, The First National Bank of Sonora filed a default notice on a $472,000 loan taken out in May 2023.
The coffeehouse isn’t the only property in default under the owning entity, CommonWealth Coffee LLC, which is listed to Jorge Herrera. The bank has also filed default notices for a $448,000 loan on the residential property at 122 Davis Court, adjacent to the coffee shop, as well as a $1.35 million loan on the apartment complex at 930 E. Grayson St., listed under The Cottages on Grayson.
The company’s other cafe locations on Jones Street, in the Weston Centre and in Hemisfair Park does not seem to be impacted, but the company’s website was not working as of Friday.
Foreclosure sales on the affected properties are slated for Feb. 4.
CommonWealth Coffeehouse’s Broadway location first opened in 2015 under the co-ownership of Herrera and José Ramon Campos.
Herrero had first purchased and renovated the dilapidated property with intentions of opening the cafe and bakery in August 2014, however, when two neighbors filed complaints the city discovered it had not, in fact, zoned the property for commercial enterprise as was advertised. Then-District 2 Councilman Keith Toney pressed City Council to deny a rezoning request.
But with half a million dollars invested in the project, Herrera and Campos didn’t give up. The zoning vote was eventually overturned with the help of Toney’s successor, former Councilman Alan Warrick, and CommonWealth opened that following January. Since then, the local coffee conglomerate grew to have its other locations throughout downtown.
The company opened its newest location on Jones Avenue in 2023, moving into a space formerly occupied by Rosella Coffee.
The company did not respond to multiple requests for comment on Friday.
