Congress MP Rakibul Hussain, who was attacked by miscreants while he was going to attend a Congress workers’ meeting on Thursday, faced another hurdle on Sunday when the Nagaon administration denied permission to the organisers to hold a Congress party meeting at Hatipukhuri, Rupahihat. The meeting, which was supposed to be held at 10 am, was later held at 12 pm, as workers were barred from participating. Heavy security was deployed in the area. Congress leaders alleged that after the party workers were barred from taking part in the meeting, they eventually marched to the venue.

“It is just a general meeting of our party. But the way the administration tried to prevent us from holding the meeting shows how Himanta Biswa Sarma is scared of us,” said Rakibul Hussain.

The meeting was attended by Rakibul Hussain, his son Tanzil Hussain and Nagaon Congress MP Pradyut Bordoloi.

Bordoloi said, “Over 700-800 workers were prevented from participating in the meeting, but they defied all the odds and came here walking to the venue”.

Hussain has for long represented Samaguri assembly in Nagaon. However, in the last Lok Sabha polls, he contested from Dhubri Lok Sabha seat and won the seat. His son Tanzil Hussain lost the seat to BJP’s Diplu Ranjan Sarmah in the by-election last year.Meanwhile, on Thursday, Hussain, who was on a two-wheeler with some supporters to attend a Congress workers’ meeting in Gunabari was attacked with a cricket bat. His PSO fired at least four rounds as the commotion turned out of control. Two of the PSOs were injured in the attack. On Friday, Hussain lodged an FIR against 22 individuals at Nagaon Sadar Police Station.

Congress party legislators on Friday staged a protest in the premises of the Assam Legislative Assembly against the attack. Assam police had arrested 10 people in connection with the attack.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated on X earlier, “Police had identified the individuals involved in the alleged assault on the Congress MP. The identified suspects are Harun of Jamtola, Haresh of Fakoli, Basir of Tamulitup, Kasem Ali of Kawoimari, Rosidul of Kawoimari, Ayub Gunabari, Lutkior of Rail Station, Khaleque of Rowmari, Mojibur of Gorematikhowa and Jahangir of Koachgaon”.
