The Calvert County Board of Commissioners unanimously greenlighted an update to the operations and layout of Breezy Point Campground.

The decision, made during the board’s final meeting of 2024 on December 17, introduces a hybrid camping model that includes both short-term and seasonal sites. Under the new plan, Breezy Point will offer 35 short-term camping sites and 48 seasonal sites.

According to an article published by The Baynet on January 9, as part of the changes, the county has adjusted seasonal campsite fees. Rates for general seasonal sites will rise from $2,375 to $4,300.

Water view sites will also increase from $2,675 to $4,500, canal sites from $3,075 to $4,800, and beach sites from $3,075 to $5,000.

The adjustments reflect a broader trend seen at comparable campgrounds, according to the Calvert County Department of Parks and Recreation, which presented the updates during the meeting.

Additional changes include a $55 pump-out fee for RVs and the introduction of a seasonal campsite lottery system. The lottery will take place before each camping season to determine the distribution of seasonal sites.

The decision to adopt a hybrid model comes after the previous year’s short-term-only plan faced significant backlash. The 2024 approach, which eliminated seasonal sites in favor of 75 short-term sites, was intended to address frustrations from campers who struggled to secure reservations.

However, many campers criticized the shift. According to a report by The Baynet, some labeled the policy a “logistical nightmare,” expressing concerns about increased crime and other issues resulting from the influx of short-term visitors.

However, a representative from the Parks and Recreation Department stated, “I will say from fielding concerns and having to reply to them… I had significantly less last year than I have ever had working for Breezy Point Campground.”
