Creature Commandos is technically the first entry into the DC Universe, and has made a quick reputation as being one of the best recent superhero shows in a long time. The show is filled with James Gunn’s charm, including all the hallmarks of what makes his stories so great.
The animated series’ characters are equally tragic as they are brutal. With so many intense fights and gory kills, there are several amazing fighters within the Creature Commandos team and show. However, some seem more lethal than meets the eye. It’s a fascinating show with several of DC’s newest fan-favorite characters.
Nina Muzursky AKA The Mermaid Wasn’t Born to Fight
Creature Commandos can easily be considered to be an anti-hero show. Instead of a big, bombastic battle to blow out the end of the series, the characters end the conflict quietly. Unfortunately, the second-to-last casualty of the conflict was Nina Muzursky, also known as the Mermaid. As the show was brought to audiences by the creative genius of James Gunn, audiences believed the team would function similarly to how other superhero teams of his have been in the past, such as the Guardians of the Galaxy and the Suicide Squad. However, Nina proves that wrong.
10 Creature Commandos Characters We Want to See In the DCU
Creature Commandos Season 1 has come to an explosive end, but some of the hit show’s characters could show up in future DCU movies and series.
Audiences were expecting to see each character have their moment. Instead, they realize too late that their mission was a lie, which results in Nina being killed quickly and quietly, and without much of a fight. The finale episode showed just how tragic her character was, having been labeled a monster her whole life due to her aquatic affliction. She unfortunately was forced into a war she didn’t deserve to be involved in.

Weasel Is Less Lethal Than Before
Like Nina, Weasel Is One of Task Force M’s Gentlest Soldiers
Sean Gunn’s Weasel made his quick debut in James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad as a member of the team that Amanda Waller sent to die as distraction. However, Weasel beats the rest of the team to the punch after supposedly drowning in the ocean by simply jumping out of the plane. However, the end credits scene sees he is completely fine, and he’s able to join a new team in the future.
Weasel was one of the first members to become a fan favorite in the Creature Commandos. For his episode, “Chasing Squirrels,” audiences got to see that Weasel’s foretold child-murdering past was simply a rumor perpetuated by the people who were afraid of him. His tragic past haunts him to this day, and audiences realize that Weasel might not have ever taken a life. However, in anyone’s time of need, Weasel comes in clutch with vicious backup. He might not be as lethal as his fellow members, but he can certainly make a hit count.

G.I. Robot Is Always Ready For Battle
G.I. Robot Was Designed to Kill Nazis During World War II
Sean Gunn also voices the charismatic G.I. Robot. In “Cheers to The Tin Man,” audiences see how much of an absolute tank he is as a person. Even in the face of kindness or tragedy, G.I. Robot always does what’s right. Being practically immortal, G.I. fought in World War II, having taken out several Nazis quickly in battle, and continues his fight to this day. In one of the best fight scenes of the series, he’s able to let loose and tear through the entire army of the Sons of Themyscira.
Who Are the New Creature Commandos? Every Member of Season 2’s Team
The season finale of Creature Commandos introduces a new version of the team led by the Bride. Who are the new members of Task Force M?
The only reason he couldn’t be more of a help was due to him being blown up by the show’s villain, Circe. He does return in the end to much acclaim, built with a brand-new body. While he is one of the best fighters on the team, he was able to be taken out quickly and simply. G.I. Robot became an instant fan-favorite hero in the show, and audiences can’t wait to see who he’ll take down in the future.

Dr. Phosphorus Delights Himself in Burning His Victims
Dr. Phosphorus Has the Power to Disintegrate Organic Matter
Probably the most unintentionally lethal member of the Commandos, Dr. Phosphorus is a classically tragic DC villain of circumstance. After borrowing money from the wrong people (particularly Gotham City mob boss Rupert Thorne), his family is murdered and Phosphorus is forced into his own nuclear machine. In a mad scientist backstory-spin, the doctor becomes a glowing green nuclear skeleton intent on taking revenge.
Dr. Phosphorus simply touches someone, and melts upon impact. He is horrifically evil after being forced into his life of crime, although he wasn’t able to take on the likes of the Batman successfully. While he almost drifts through fight scenes with lethal ease, Dr. Phosphorus isn’t as great of a fighter as he could be. He even lost to team leader Rick Flag Sr. on their first mission, and Flag was practically naked. But Dr. Phosphorus doesn’t need to be a great warrior as he is a nuclear man.

Eric Frankenstein Is an Obsessive, but Lethal Monster
Eric Frankenstein Is Driven by His Obsession for The Bride’s Love
As classic as the old story is with a DC and James Gunn twist, Victor Frankenstein’s monster, Eric Frankenstein, bashes his way through history. As a heavy tank-like fighter with massive fists and incredible strength, he’s able to out-fight his lower level of intellect. David Harbour takes on the role of the stitched-up fighter, and voices him with incredible depth and beautiful storytelling.
Creature Commandos Reveals How Much of the DCEU Was Rebooted and Confirms Fans’ Concerns
The first season of Creature Commandos gives fans a clear answer on how much of the DC Extended Universe remains in the new DCU from James Gunn.
Frankenstein’s monster is easily one of the most intimidating figures in the series. As the audience gets to see more of what kind of man he is, particularly from the episode “The Iron Pot,” fans experience the absolute brutality and malice he’s comfortable bringing. His only goal in his second-chance life is to find his long-lost love of the Bride, in which they battle throughout time. His only flaw is, at times, he can be bested in combat, but Frankenstein is still the immovable object that nobody can stop.

Rick Flag Sr. Is the DCU’s Answer to Marvel’s Nick Fury
Rick Flag Sr. Is Committed to His Tasks, But Can Deviate When He Sees Fit
Among the initial set photos that came from the new Superman film releasing on July 11, 2025, fans also got to see Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr. Somewhat connected to the first James Gunn DC film, The Suicide Squad, Joel Kinnamen’s Rick Flag Jr. is unfortunately killed by John Cena’s Peacemaker. In Creature Commandos, Frank Grillo plays lethal army man Rick Flag Sr., the previous Rick’s father.
Rick Flag Sr. is the perfect leader of the Creature Commandos, keeping them in line and preventing them from running away from their duties. He is even able to best the likes of Frankenstein. However, the way to defeat him is by mental battle rather than muscle. The princess of Pokolistan was able to easily manipulate Flag, leading to him defecting from his own team and almost accidentally causing a future world war. This massive mess-up aside, he’s still an incredible fighter and a lethal member of the team.

Clayface Replicates Bane’s Iconic Back-Breaking With Rick Flag Sr.
Batman’s Mud Monster Rogue Makes His Debut
Although he was spoiled to be in the series from the trailer, fans were still ecstatic to see Clayface make his DC Universe debut in the fifth episode “The Iron Pot.” In this episode, the audience sees the Commandos return to the fictional nation of Pokolistan in order to take out the princess after hearing that Circe’s vision might spell doom if she stays alive. However, Frankenstein and Rick Flag Sr. make an unintentionally perfect team when they investigate the validity of these visions, and find the monstrous Clayface waiting for them.

Every Clue to the Villains Still Hiding in Matt Reeves’ Batman Universe
Many villains of Batman’s classic rogues gallery have been teased in The Batman and The Penguin. So which ones will appear in the future?
DC’s golden voice, Alan Tudyk, perfectly voices the character. His appearance is straight out of the comics, as a massive clay man constantly shifting and growing into more lethal, fury-driven sizes. Unfortunately, he only sticks around for part of the episode, but it’s within an exciting scene, and the show makes sure to build him up to be a genuine threat. Just by seeing what’s left of him after taking out Flag for the rest of the series, it’s clear that Clayface is a threat worthy of the bat.
2
Circe Makes a Strong Impression as the First DCU Supervillain
Circe Uses Violent Methods for Stopping a Third World War
Circe was the perfect villain to kick off the DC Universe. Although it can be argued that a majority of the characters in the show are simply villains as well, Circe is the first to be in the antagonist role. What makes her perfect is how easy it is to get on board with exactly what kind of character she is. Simply, she’s a sorceress. More specifically, she’s an immortal Amazonian who seeks to rule over her homeland of Themyscira, the hidden island Wonder Woman comes from.
In the series, she recruits a pathetic group of self-proclaimed warriors called the Sons of Themyscira who are willing to fight for her. She attempts to assassinate the princess of Pokolistan to save the world from a cataclysmic war. Her time as the villain only lasts halfway through the series, but she kicks off the DC Universe’s rogues gallery on the right foot.

The Bride of Frankenstein is The Best Creature Commando
The Bride Is the Most Versatile Fighter of Task Force M
Indira Varma voices the best character in the series, the Bride of Frankenstein. She kicks off the series with her tragic backstory, having been created by the hands of Dr. Frankenstein as the intended Bride of his monster. However, the Bride instead falls for the doctor and not the monster. Out of a fit of rage, the monster kills the doctor, and continues to chase after his “love” for the rest of the time. Over the years, the Bride has picked up a lot of fighting know-how.
Frankenstein is a brutal, muscular monster of a man. The Bride, however, has everything he has, but with a more developed brain. She kills and battles with such ease, it’s almost impossible to stop her. The only fight she lost was when Circe turned her arms into balloons, and the Bride was still able to get a few licks in. She’s durable, strong, lethal, smart and rounds out to be the new leader of the Creature Commandos for future adventures. The Bride is undoubtedly the best fighter in the DC Universe that fans know of.
All seven episodes of Creature Commandos Season 1 are streaming on Max.
Follows a group of military super humans composed by a human leader, a werewolf, a vampire, Frankenstein’s monster and a gorgon.
