Danielle Fishel and former Boy Meets World costar Maitland Ward hash out their estrangement in a tense discussion on the latest episode of Pod Meets World.
Fishel and co-hosts Will Friedle and Rider Strong welcomed Ward, who played Rachel McGuire during the sitcom’s college-set seasons, on Sunday’s episode of the rewatch pod to talk about her transition into the adult entertainment space. The episode, the first to feature a warning to listeners about “adult language and subject matter,” takes a decidedly heated turn towards the end, when Fishel asks “do you hate us?” and points to comments Ward has made about the podcast to the press.
“No, I do not hate you,” says Ward. “I think that you hate me because you wouldn’t speak to me on Girl Meets World, and that was hurtful.”

A back-and-forth then ensues about the relationship through the years; the perceived estrangement began in 2013, when Ward sent a “heartfelt message” to Fishel over Facebook but discovered they were no longer friends on the platform. Fishel, who explains that she rarely uses Facebook, says it was Friedle who told her about the message, and she then asked Friedle for Ward’s number so she could apologize for the lack of response.
“And you wrote back to Will, ‘No, let’s just save it for the podcast. It’ll be great for the ratings,'” says Fishel. Ward then refers to the “weirdness” on set of the spin-off series Girl Meets World. “You had an attitude about it though, because I know there was some beef between us and I didn’t get it,” she says. “And maybe I picked up the wrong signals, but definitely there was some sort of like weirdness there. I didn’t know if you thought that I was trying . . . to steal attention or something. I was genuinely confused why we wouldn’t be good.”
“I don’t feel as though I was not good with you, but I definitely didn’t have a relationship with you that was like, ‘Oh my gosh, my long lost friend Maitland,'” says Fishel, citing a general “tumultuous” experience on the set of the sequel that drastically differed from the experience on set of the original 1990s sitcom. “I am sorry that you thought I had something personally against you.”
Refutes Ward, “Listen, I mean, you didn’t like the fact that I was getting a lot of attention at that time and going off in my own space and taking away that attention.” After a brief pause, Fishel makes note of her Maxim cover and says she wasn’t upset, then cites Ward’s negative comments about the cast “almost any time the podcast is in the news.” To which Ward responds, “Are you trying to accuse me of using you, or are you trying to accuse me of something?”
Referencing star Ben Savage — notably, the cast’s previous revelation that he longer speaks to them — and series creator Michael Jacobs, Ward adds, “I think there’s a divide too because you hate Ben and you guys hate Michael,” Ward says, prompting Fishel and co. to shut down that presumption. “Ben is one of the most important people I’ve ever met in my life, and I can’t stand the fact that he won’t speak to us. And that’s what it is: He won’t speak to us,” says Friedle, who, along with Strong, had been largely quiet during the quarrel.
Conceding that she doesn’t listen to the pod regularly, Ward calls the episodes largely negative, to which Fishel offers, “They’re just experiences. So you don’t listen to the podcast regularly, but your overall opinion of it is that we are negative about Michael and Ben and the show.” Ward then suggests the trio have been speaking negatively about Jacobs “just to get listens,” Strong says, “No, if I’m talking about Michael yelling at me, that’s my experience. I was yelled at. I watched him do things. I can describe that, that’s the truth.”
The argument eventually cools, and Fishel makes it clear that she doesn’t hate Ward — “not even the slightest” — and extends an invitation to reappear on the show. Listen to the episode above.
