Dermot Mulroney may not have won Rachel Green’s heart, but he still has the love of Friends fans everywhere.

During a recent appearance on The Jennifer Hudson Show, the Chicago Fire star opened up about his experiences being recognized by fans and divulged some of the surprising titles that prompt people to approach him.

“Well, there’s the regulars,” he said, citing My Best Friend’s Wedding, Scream VI, and the recent rom-com Anyone But You. “But some come out of the deep past. Angels in the Outfield, oh my goodness! I just have a tiny part in it,  but it’s such a meaningful movie to people.”

He then pointed to Friends, the iconic ’90s sitcom that has taken on a second life in the streaming era.

“It’s a huge show and I have a tiny part on it, but that guy, that character just came to life — and then took on even more of a life when people started to watch it over and over again,” Mulroney said. “You know, we didn’t used to have comfort shows, but now we do. It’s like something we invented to explain what happens when you go back and start at the beginning and watch all of the Friends episodes again.”

He then quipped, “But I think the three best ones are the ones that I’m in.”

Mulroney joined Friends for a brief period in its penultimate season as Gavin Mitchell, a work-rival-turned-love-interest for Jennifer Aniston‘s Rachel. Alas, their romance was short-lived: Rachel discovered her co-worker’s crush on her and they shared a kiss, but ultimately, her history with Ross (David Schwimmer) held her back.

Though the episodes originally aired in 2003, Mulroney said fan reactions have ramped up in recent years — which occasionally causes some confusion.

“That one was weird because people are shouting, ‘Hey, Gavin!’ at me at like, a gas station, and it had been so long,” he explained. “When Friends re-emerged on streamers, I was suddenly super-recognizable for something I did 20 years ago.”

He even recalled done of his memorable bits on the show, which saw Gavin introduce himself and offer a handshake to Rachel’s newborn baby: “It’s still funny!”

Despite Gavin’s Rachel-centric storyline, Mulroney still got to share some scenes with the rest of the beloved Friends cast, which also included Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, and the late Matthew Perry. Years later Mulroney reunited with Cox for his role in Scream VI — and even to her, Mulroney insisted that his Friends episodes reign supreme.

“It was so fun to talk to Courteney because I appeared with her on Friends. We together decided that the three episodes that I did were by far the most favorite of all the series,” he joked to Parade in 2023. “[It] seems weird that we’d then be in a movie together and get to talk about that. But it’s amazing. I was so proud of that designation, even if it was sort of self-ascribed.”
