Wicked may be a prequel, but we may need a prequel to the prequel to fill in the details of the lives of Madame Morrible (Michelle Yeoh) and the Wizard (Jeff Goldblum).

In the hit movie musical, which is now available to stream on Peacock, fans may notice the slightest hint of sexual tension between the two characters. That’s there by design. “We always hinted,” Yeoh tells Entertainment Weekly.

“What did go on with these two?” adds Goldblum. “We didn’t talk about it.”

“It just happened,” Yeoh concludes of the romantic frisson between their characters. The chemistry between the two actors was on full display back in January when they embraced the internet calling them “zaddy” and “mother” in a presenting bit at the Golden Globes.

Goldblum says there’s a lot to fill in as to the extent of the relationship. “We met a while ago,” he surmises. “The question is, when did I float in? How many years ago during this drought, which had something to do with this animal business? And what happened between us with that [animal] business and how close were we?”

Yeoh has her own ideas. “I always thought Madame Morrible helped you create the Wizard,” she says to Goldblum. “She knew for a fact she was the only one who had magic, and her magic was not good enough. But then what they were both very smart [about] was: How do we play on the crowd? How do we make them fear us?”

For Goldblum, that common goal and ingenuity is what would’ve brought them together in the beginning. But once Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo) enters the picture, the two begin to have somewhat differing opinions on how to proceed. “We may have been deeply close to each other,” Goldblum reflects, “and as we see us now, we’re veering apart.”

Perhaps Wicked: For Good, which hits theaters Nov. 21, will give us further glimpses of Morrible and the Wizard’s past. But for now, fans can dissect their every interaction on Peacock.
