Denial isn’t always a river — sometimes it’s the truth.

Just ask Doechii, the “Denial is a River” rapper who is shutting down rumors that she was lip-syncing during her epic performance at the 2025 Grammy Awards

On Saturday, the musician took to TikTok to voice her irritation, responding to a commenter who claimed that during “some parts of the live song you can see that she’s not saying anything and the song is still playing with her pre-recorded voice.”

To this, Doechii literally screamed in frustration.

“I can’t possibly get on here and say this calmly or nicely: y’all are stupid as hell,” the rapper begins, taking aim at those who left similar comments. “So slow! That is my DJ’s voice picking up on the lines that I can’t say because I’m doing A SOMERSAULT.”

Indeed, the elaborate performance of her tracks “Catfish” and “Denial is a River” saw the rapper pull off meticulous choreography that included a somersault, a dazzling costume change, and being lifted several times by her troupe of suit-clad dancers. It’s a feat that the performer says was especially challenging given her poor health at the time.

Turning to the camera, Doechii says firmly, “That entire performance was live! I was sick as a dog with bronchitis and the flu, performing my ass off in a straddle on top of human men.”

As for those who still have doubts, she points out that the performance includes the audible sound of her hair beads slapping against the microphone. “Worked my ass off to build the stamina for that, for y’all to play in my face,” she complains. “I don’t lip-sync. Don’t ever f—ing play with me like that. Ever!”

Lip-syncing allegations aside, Doechii has been riding high since the Feb. 2 Grammy Award ceremony. She walked in a triple nominee — Best Rap Performance, Best New Artist, and Best Rap Album — and walked away a winner, becoming the third woman to ever win for Best Rap Album.

She acknowledged the history-making moment during her emotional speech.

“This category was introduced in 1989 and two women have won,” she began, before correcting herself. “Three women have won: Lauryn Hill, Cardi B, and Doechii.”

Through tears, she said that she poured her “heart and soul” into the Grammy-winning record, Alligator Bites Never Heal, noting, “I went through so much.” She then encouraged others to follow their dreams as well, no matter the obstacles in their path.

“I know that there is some Black girl out there, so many Black women out there, that are watching me right now, and I want to tell you, you can do it,” she continued. “Anything is possible. Anything is possible. Don’t allow anybody to project any stereotypes on you, to tell you that you can’t be here, that you’re too dark, or that you’re not smart enough, or that you’re too dramatic, or you’re too loud. You are exactly who you need to be to be right where you are, and I am a testimony right now.”

Later that night, she kept the triumph going by dropping “Nosebleeds,” a celebratory single in which she raps, “Guess we’ll never see the day that Doechii crown falls / guess you’ll never live to see the day Doechii loses.”

And she has more to come. On Monday, Doechii posted a photo with Blackpink singer Jennie to tease their upcoming single, which is set to drop on Friday, Feb. 21 at 12am ET.
