The animated movie Dog Man is hitting the big screen this weekend, and the film has just been given its debut Rotten Tomatoes score with its early reviews. It’s a respectable number, as the critics have labeled Dog Man as a “fresh” movie.

Currently, Dog Man is sitting with a score of 70% on Rotten Tomatoes. Most of the site’s approved critics are giving positive reviews to the film, which is described as a faithful adaptation of the original books by Dav Pilkey. Some of the praise goes to the unique art style, with Ben Kenigsberg of the New York Times calling Dog Man a “visual pleasure.”

How to Train Your Dragon Trailer Teases Faithful Remake of a DreamWorks Classic

Universal debuts the official teaser trailer for its upcoming live-action remake of the DreamWorks Animation movie, How to Train Your Dragon.

“The computer renderings have just enough texture, and the movements enough jittery tactility, to give the film a handmade feel,” Kenigsberg added. “The splashy color palette keeps the eye engaged.”

Dog Man is going to be a solid hit and one of the best movies purely made for children I’ve seen in a long time,” critic Julian Lytle of The Beat also opined. “It’s not about adults at all. This is for the Dog Man lovers, and it hits it out of the park.”

Dog Man Gets a Positive Review from CBR

CBR’s own Ben Wasserman gave the film a positive review, calling it “charming,” even if “occasionally ruff.” Wasserman also gave praise to the movie’s animation style, which gives Dog Man “a worthwhile” watch more than anything else.

“This movie goes for a cross between painted textures and almost felt art-inspired character models, giving their actions and the world of Ohkay City a vibrancy straight out of Pilkey’s novels — sometimes quite literally when the movie cut to newspaper clips drawn in his art style,” Wasserman wrote. “The visualized text boxes and added action lines also help capture the exaggerated nature of Dog Man‘s world, giving it a comic-booky feel while looking deliberately rough around the edges.”

The feature film adaptation of Dog Man was first announced in 2020. It serves as a spinoff of Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie. Peter Hastings wrote and directed the feature film adaptation, which tells the story of a dog-human hybrid who must keep the city safe against the villainous Petey the Cat. Hastings voices Dog Man while Pete Davidson voices Petey. Other stars include Lil Rel Howery, Isla Fisher, Poppy Liu, Stephen Root, Billy Boyd, and Ricky Gervais.

Dog Man hits theaters on Jan. 31, 2025.
