Summary

  • Dragon Ball Daima’s ending left fans questioning the continuity with Super, sparking debates on social media.
  • Despite mixed reactions from fans, the series featured new transformations and elements not seen in Super.
  • Post-credits scene hinted at a possible sequel, offering hope for explanations to resolve inconsistencies.

Dragon Ball Daima finally ended, but left many fans with questions about the story. The GT-inspired atmosphere of the series drove some fans away, as DBGT is a divisive show in the Dragon Ball fandom, and many would rather pretend that it has never existed.

However, many fans continued to watch it, even though they were not convinced by the premise of the anime, in the hopes that the story would eventually come up with explanations that would directly link it to Dragon Ball Super somehow. Of course, not all fans were wary of the show. A good portion enjoyed the series and/or its Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball GT vibes.

After months of ups and downs, Dragon Ball DAIMA has come to an end. So what ended up happening?

Why Are DB Super Fans Mad At Daima’s Finale?

Anyway, instead of giving explanations, the second half of Dragon Ball Daima featured many elements that, while not exactly contradicting Super, don’t seem to make much sense when you think about the continuity between those two series. These elements include Vegeta and Goku transforming into SSJ3 and SSJ4, respectively, since these are transformations they haven’t used in Super yet.

On the other hand, unlike Dragon Ball GT, it is not easy to dismiss this series as “not canon” because it is widely known that Akira Toriyama was deeply involved in it, and, according to Akyo Iyuko, wrote most of the series.

Daima even addressed that both Goku and Vegeta trained hard after the Buu Saga and unlocked these new forms, making it clear that, if Super takes place after Daima, they know how to transform into them, while giving no explanation to possible reasons that they haven’t done it.

What Are Fans Saying On Social Media?

Most complaints are related to the continuity between these two series, or the explanations given in the final episode — and posts about it can be found on several Dragon Ball subreddits. For example, one user asked:

So… after Daima’s last episode… Please someone explain to me how this fits Super, it was both disappointing and doesn’t fit at all with the timeline. Wasn’t all of this supposed to be canon?

Despite lots of fans expressing dissatisfaction, there are many in the replies saying that people shouldn’t take the timeline too seriously, and remembering that this is Toriyama’s view about his own story — if he didn’t mind it, then there is no reason to make a big deal of it. A few are concerned about how the community may be divided because of Daima, like this one:

The worst part is the arguing between hardcore Daima fans and hardcore Super fans that is already starting. And it’s gonna be worse than GT vs Super canon debates ever were if they don’t fix this mess fast in a Daima Movie, Season 2 or the Black Freeza arc…

Other complaints include under-exploited elements introduced in Daima. At the beginning of the story, Goku learns about Join Bugs (or Fusion Bugs), a type of Medi Bugs that allows up to three people to fuse. Due to that, many expected to see either Gogeta or maybe even a new fusion, with Goku, Piccolo and Vegeta. But these bugs were properly explored during the series.

Could There Still Be Any Explanations?

Daima‘s post-credits scene opened up the possibility of a sequel. Then there would be room for explanations of the supposed inconsistencies. Not only that, but if a Daima manga is announced, just like Dragon Ball Super, the author could dive into the lore and come up with connections between the series.

However, the production team of Dragon Ball Daima, including Toriyama, did not seem to worry about it — so even if a sequel is announced, they might not try to explain anything once again. For now, it may be best to just enjoy Daima and Super without worrying too much.

Dragon Ball Daima is available to stream on Hulu and Crunchyroll.
