A Reddit short story is making the jump to the big screen. Sydney Sweeney is attached to star in I Pretended to Be a Missing Girl, an upcoming movie based on a Reddit short story by Joe Cote.

Per Deadline, Sweeney will also produce I Pretended to Be a Missing Girl through her Fifty-Fifty Films. The movie is set up at Warner Bros., with Eric Roth set to adapt Cote’s Reddit short story. Roth is best known for scripting Forrest Gump (1994), The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2008), and Denis Villeneuve’s 2021 movie Dune. He also provided additional literary material for the 2024 sequel Dune: Part Two. The short story centers around a drifter who “impersonates a missing girl to rob the girl’s family — only to realize she’s made a terrible mistake.”

Before the success of Dune, Denis Villeneuve made another must watch sci-fi movie, that will be streaming on Hulu next month.

Sweeney is currently one of Hollywood’s most in-demand actors, with several projects in various stages of development. While she has been acting since the late 2000s, Sweeney’s breakout didn’t come until 2019, when she starred in the hit HBO drama series Euphoria. She earned an Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series nomination at the Emmys for her role as Cassie Howard in Euphoria, which is currently in production on its third season.

After a small role in Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (2019), Sweeney began to appear in leading or major supporting roles in movies, such as Reality Winner in Reality and Bea Messina in Anyone But You (both 2023). She also appeared in the Sony/Marvel movie Madame Web and the horror hit Immaculate (both 2024), the latter of which she also produced.

Sweeney has currently wrapped on two upcoming movies: the Apple thriller Echo Valley with Julianne Moore and Domhnall Gleeson and the untitled biopic about Christy Martin, in which she portrays the well-known female boxer. She is also starring in and producing Scandalous!, an upcoming biopic about the clandestine love affair between Novak and singer-dancer and movie star Sammy Davis Jr. in 1957. Sweeney will portray Kim Novak with Alien: Romulus‘ David Jonsson as Sammy Davis Jr. Colman Domingo will make his directorial debut on the Miramax drama film.

Sydney Sweeney’s Next Movie Is The Housemaid

However, only one of Sweeney’s upcoming movies has a release date: Paul Feig’s The Housemaid, which will be released in theaters this Christmas by Lionsgate. The psychological thriller is based on the 2022 novel of the same name by Rebecca Sonnenshine and follows Sweeney’s Millie, a struggling woman who is relieved to get a fresh start as a housemaid to Nina (Amanda Seyfried) and Andrew (Brandon Sklenar), an upscale, wealthy couple. She soon learns the family’s secrets are far more dangerous than her own. Sweeney is also attached to The Housemaid as an executive producer.

No word yet on when production might start on I Pretended to Be a Missing Girl.
