A proposal to convert four retired horse lorries into tourist accommodation in East Lothian is under review by East Lothian Council’s planning department.
The project, which is planned for GreenWood at Redshill Farm, south of Gifford, aims to create a new form of glamping accommodation and contribute to the local economy.
According to the applicants, James Tait & Son, the converted vehicles would provide year-round accommodation, utilizing vehicles that might otherwise be discarded.
The family behind the proposal has prior experience in the holiday accommodation sector, having previously operated The Old Farmhouse, according to a report by the East Lothian Courier.
The proposal emphasizes the role of tourism in East Lothian’s economy. A market research document submitted as part of the application indicates that Gifford’s main tourism draws include local attractions, nature walks, and food and drink options.
The document also identifies a gap in the market for glamping accommodations, with the developers positioning the project as a response to this demand.
The research highlights that glamping is a growing trend within the UK, which has gained momentum in recent years, particularly in the aftermath of the Covid-19 pandemic.
The document states that glamping tends to attract higher nightly rates than traditional camping and nearby hotels, positioning it as a potential driver for increased accommodation options and higher rates in the Gifford area.
The proposed project is expected to contribute nearly £170,000 annually to the local economy.
As part of the plan, the developers also propose providing a communal bike storage facility to encourage visitors to explore the surrounding countryside by bicycle.
The accommodation would include a single bedroom, living space, and a shower room within the repurposed horse lorries.
The proposal is set to be discussed at the next meeting of the Gifford Community Council, where further community input is expected.
